Animal Farming
came across a large animal farm, cows, sheep, pigs and rabbits. I have decided to become a farmer, for a change. There is so much to do around the farm, its going to keep me busy for a while.
My question is, food for animals during winter. can I cut grass and store it? will it last through winter? Haybales lying around the farm, seem to be just a useless prop atm.

From what i could already see and hear, yes. Grass cutting may be universal and isn't perishable. It's easy to obtain in large amount and (propably) possible to get even in winter. Cows eat it for sure, rabbits and sheep most likely (i didn't see it but it's obvious) and chickens - propably. I've heard that they can only eat corn and animal feed but from what i could see (20 chickens eating 1 animal feed bag for 1,5 months) i doubt they weren't eating grass straight from the ground. As for pigs - they eat everything. Either way, take it with a pinch of salt, i haven't thoroughly tested it yet so i may be speaking a lot of gibberish. (sorry for any mistakes, english is not my mother tongue)

If you have a scythe in your inventory you can right click a patch of ground and harvest a 3x3 patch of grass. That grass can be placed in a feeding trough. Be aware the grass can get heavy if you're harvesting alot of it. You can also use the hand scythe to do this, but it takes alot longer because you can only do one tile at a time. The grass does regrow and the trimmings do not spoil as far as I've seen. As far as watering them, you will want to get your hands on one of the small metal troughs. The large ones seem to be bugged. The small metal ones hold 100L so you wont need to refill them as often. I also recommend keeping an eye out for 3-4 metal buckets (holds 10L) so you don't need to make as many trips. They also come in handy when it comes time to milk them.

Taken directly from the Lua scripts it seems all animals will eat "AnimalFeed, Grass, Hay, Vegetables, Fruits"

Pigs cannot eat all as the comment above suggests, only the above 5.

Chickens also eat "Seeds, Nuts, Nut, Insect" (no idea what the difference between Nut and Nuts are)

Turkey can eat all of the above "AnimalFeed, Grass, Hay, Vegetables, Fruits, Nuts" but not Nut or Insects.

Rats and Mice can eat "All"

Fruits and Vegetables will rot but I think animals will still eat it (Not tested). Rotten food may disappear after enough time depending on your settings so it's not reliable for animal food.

Scythe grass does not appear to have a check for snow or season but I cannot find the definition for for the method `checkHaveGrass()` so presumably you can get it all year round.
