b42 surface in wilderness
Trying to make a stone hammer in the wilderness, but I need a surface.

I did find a large chunk of rock to use a surface, but limiting simple crafting recipes behind a table-like surface makes no sense when you have a virtually infinite flat surface right under your feet.

I like the idea that crafting some things require e.g. light or a surface, but in a survival situation such as a zombie apocalypse, it feels our characters need to try a little harder to survive.

Hoping the developers focus on fixing/balancing the existing mechanics of b41 before going for the new stuff from b42.

Would be great to have more flat surface options in the wilderness ngl.
Tree stumps, fallen tree trunks, naturally occuring flat ground, what have you.

It would be neat if we could build a super basic table out of branchs and bark twine.

I do that when I go camping.

I think this is an example of them going down a rabbit hole of "realism" and ignoring the "desperate times call for desperate measures" aspect of the entire situation of the game. Obviously a craftsman is going to consider his workshop incomplete without a table, but if I need a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pounding device in the wilderness, I'm going to find a way.

This is unnecessary tedium.

You can use large rocks(the ones you cant walk over) as a surface.

if you have any tools you are also able to craft a log surface which looks like a tree stump. Anything like a crate, table or furniture (like a bookshelf) will act as a surface too.

Other than those, remember we are on an "Unstable beta" of B42 that isn't the finished product, and perhaps have access to half of the build at this time. Crafting in general is still getting large updates, including 2-3 more trees and more things for a "true wildreness playthrough", maybe hold on off this kind of playthrough untill they add the wildreness starting scenario.

You can make a table out of a log. Does that not work?

An interesting compromise would be to just force the player to sit on the ground for crafts requiring a surface if there is no table around. It would allow to nerf the craft during combat as the devs wanted without hindering or making incoherent a playthrough in the wilderness.

its more likely a log is used. aren't there flat stones and stuff i found a few odd stones which were like cutting boards. i honestly don't know if they can be used for this stuff on the go like how you;d presume a chopping board works.

Yes it works. You need Carpentry 1, a Log, and a Saw.

Or the devs could just get time to cook and not expect their build to function fully in unstable.

Anybody reading the thursdoids and other update news and posts will know that B42 is "laying the foundations" for a full wildreness playthough. And currently the large rocks allow you to craft without special tools or anything. it isn't 100% handy but it is possible, and this is UNSTABLE, EARLY and rushed because players have been demanding a pre X-mas launch.. So now we get to test it.

It's not like it was in the oven for three years or anything.

I guess update dev could last a lifetime and someone would find that acceptable.

Sounds counterproductive if you play wilderness only game. Is there a way to get a saw outside of foraging now?

I'm not expecting the build42 to be fully functiunal. I was just trying to find an hypothetic solution for this issue. And just like I say a possible solution could be to be able to craft when "sit on the ground" with may be a Timer malus.
