I added something that I forgot, when you hit them you have time until they react, enough to hit them from behind or move to a better position, during that period of time, the zombie is not going to attack you and you can pass by it , it serves to make your way sometimes, also try to keep the fight in a specific place and not move so much to attract more, always have a safe path where you were clearing
Starting as a thief is usually a good idea, since it has skill levels that allow you to move faster while on guard, as well as allowing you to start vehicles without keys.
When I say groups of 3, I don't mean only with 3, because it is very likely that there will always be more, the important thing is to generate enough time in terms of distance between them, fight with 3 together to kill them and continue fighting by grouping that amount, divide and conquer

think on your feet
oh and learn how to hotwire cars, seriously its a night and day difference.
Always keep a bottle of water on you, a few rags and some alcohol wipes/pain meds.
B42 changed enough that nobody is really a pro yet. I think conspicuous is no longer a free points trait by a LOT. In particular it seems like they have a much easier time spotting you inside from a distance. I've been taking thin-skinned to make up for fewer easy negatives and I've just been going with athletic rather than both on my fire officer builds.
I still find slow healer, slow reader, weak stomach, and prone to illness worth taking. Smoker still seems worth it if you're not taking athletic (now mutually exclusive). You won't find piles of cigarettes at every gas station but you never really needed to in B41. The reluctant fighter trait (formerly pacifist) still seems like a good one if you're taking +skills in maintenance and the weapon skills you care about. No idea if Fast Learner is still close to offsetting its negatives. I've been taking thin skinned more than I used to because points are harder to come by now and usually what kills me zed-wise in this game would have killed me regardless.
You can now get maintenance/metalworking with a 6-pointer.
Based on a recent burglar game I didn't play for long, I think visual stealth is considerably better now. Not OP to my knowledge (haven't tried really focusing it yet), but it definitley seems like a couple points in sneak results in noticeably longer distances that you can reliably avoid visual detection even in daylight.
With all the new skills and specific skill books being harder to find, Fast Learner seems like an even better trait than it already was.
- and zombies are slighty attracted to Windows, doors. lead them near a house around corners to get rid of them.
- take your time
- always have a backup retreat plan (save route back in case you stumble in a horde)
- dont run, walking is ok. your faster than a zed.
- dont shoot. you kill maybe 2..but get the attention of 100..
In build 42 I have been starting with melee skills over stealth, to counteract the muscle fatigue slightly. Muscle fatigue is linked to your skills with weapons, not your strength and fitness. So going construction worker to start with will make you efficient with the weapons you will find early. The typical build I currently go with is, Lumberjack, brawler, baseball player, eagle eyed, stout, prone to illness, prone to stomach illness, fear of blood, thin skinned, slow healer. I would not call that a noob build though, thanks to thin skinned, fear of blood, and slow healer. Also, it could be a while before you find an axe or long blunt weapon, which is the only weapon skills you start with.
Tactics to lasting a month, start in Muldraugh and head to the Log Cabin in the woods with a well. Should be pretty easy. However, if you want a fun game don't do that.
As for how to play, don't worry about food and water too much. Once the power and water shuts off there will still be plenty of non perishable food left to loot, and water left behind in taps/baths/toilets.
Check every radio you come across for the preset radio stations. If you find one with the Automate Emergency Broadcast System (AEBS) tuned in, make a note of the frequency or pick up the radio (turn it off before you carry it around outside). The AEBS tells you the weather for the day, and more importantly when the helicopter is coming (it lets you know every hour on the day). If you can't find a radio tuned in to the AEBS, just remember day 6 - 9 the helicopter is coming. If you can afford to stock up on food and books just stay indoors for 3 days and the helicopter will fly past and should not cause you too much trouble. If you are lucky enough to have found a car, or you are feeling brave you can do this on foot, but you can use the helicopter to lure zombies out of town centres etc and into the rural areas. Getting away in a car is easy. On foot not so much, but...
Learn how the zombies navigate, so that you can get away. The way the AI works, is that it will take the shortest route to the last place it saw you when you break line of sight. So, when trying to get away from zombies, make some distance, break line of sight using trees or buildings, then try and make another two turns with reasonable space between them to lose the zombies. Typically, going round one house, moving to the next and doubling back down the side of it will be enough. Or, going through an external door, closing the internal doors behind you to break line of sight and then out the building through a window also works well. It also gives you time as the zombies have to break down the doors, too.
If you have to fight, swing with a blunt weapon and then use space to push the zombie, it has a tendency to push them over quickly. Find some boots and get used to stomping downed zombies. Your weapons will last a lot longer.
Walking is your friend. Unless you are in a bad condition, your normal walking speed is faster than most of the zombies, so you should only need to sprint when they get very close. Even when they lunge from a couple of metres, walking is normally enough to get you out of harms way. Use sprinting sparingly to keep your exhaustion down.
Get nimble to level 3 (or is it 5? I forget), and you should walk faster while aiming than the zombies do.
Don't sneak while you are in combat, if you need to turn and run it will make you much slower.
Avoid being outside at night at all costs in B42, even with a torch, everything outside that beam of light is dark as ♥♥♥♥. Unless you are about to starve to death, there is just no need for it.
Exercise everyday. It will raise your fitness and strength, and the more you do it, the less negative effects it will have (the regularity bar).
Stuff the pistol in your bag and don't even think about it unless you are on the outskirts of town. That will get you killed fast.
If you can do it, watch Life and Living at 0600, 1200 and 1800 everyday. The TV shows give you free cooking (0600), carpentry (1200) and survival skills (1800). The first cooking show will be on as soon as you start your game. However, if you want to max the benefits, don't watch them on TV, find the videos and only watch them when you have read the corresponding skill books. The wooden TVs can't play videos, but the modern looking ones can.
Get a pencil and eraser and mark things on your map. To get to a month, you won't need to worry about power, but if you want to go further you will. So, mark generators, mark cars that you have keys for. Mark anything you may want to come back for. The first building you should provide power to is a petrol station, so that you can get petrol. Second generator for your safe house and so on. Don't set them up inside or they will kill you.
Level 3 electricity and level 3(?) mechanics enables you to hotwire cars... alternatively you can take the burglar profession. Being a burglar makes getting a car quickly very easy, since you don't need to find keys or grind skills.
There is enough to loot and keep you going for that length of time without having to think about the survival skills. So if that is your aim, don't worry about farming, fishing, butchery, trapping, and the rest. You only need a weapon skill, sneak, nimble and lightfooted to make it that far.
Making it to a month is all about not getting bitten, or overwhelmed. So, plan your combat ahead of time, separate them out as the first comment said and take things slowly and steadily and you should be fine. 9 times out of 10, when you get overwhelmed or bitten in combat it is because you have pushed it too far. You have let yourself get exhausted, you have stayed out too long and are hungry and tired, you have taken on too many zombies in one go.
There are a lot of different techniques, it is just knowing when to use them.
