Farming on a Roof is impossible
Hey! In build 42 are you inable to just throw some dirt on a roof and make crops? I see no option when i right click on a roof floor. Am i doing something wrong or devs just deleted that option. It's a shame because i loved to do that. Cheers!

Sandbox - Nature - Farms not on Ground Level [!]

It seems the changes to the height levels has made farming on roofs more demanding on the system, and is therefore disabled by default.

One would hope that will be resolved before long.

Nice! I was wondering why I couldn't do it. Now I know.

Make sure you read and comprehend the warning before checking that sandbox option though. :P

I bet there are more rooftop gardens in movies than in real life. I've worked on high rises all over north america, and I can count on one hand how many rooftop garden's I've seen.

Flat roofs are very high maintenance, and we can't be having someone's garden project getting in the way of replacing the membranes every few years. They're easier to build and you don't need climbing gear to work on them, but if a flat roof didn't get maintenance for 5 years it would start leaking like a sieve, and start caving in after 7.

Would need to totally rework how you do roofs to accommodate regular foot traffic, and the added dead loads of your farm. They would need to be engineered more like a balcony, where in reality most of them are just a glorified tarp sloping to a few drains and a bit of gravel for protection.

I imagine the weight of the soil would cause issues as well. Dirt is heavy, and I doubt the trusses (or whatever you would call them for a flat roof) would appreciate a couple extra tons of soil being placed up there. Especially when it gets wet.

I think it also depends in which part of the world where we are.
In some parts they are more common in others less so.

We're all about minimizing square foot cost in North America. We don't do impractical billionaire vanity projects nearly as much as Dubai.

Is why buildings are all shaped the same here. Its the most material efficient shape for the space you're allotted.
