Did you try searching the forums? There are several threads addressing this issue.

It seems you are right and is currently bugged. Here's a comment about that:

How did this thread completely disappear?

Where'd you find that comment? I wnt to know if there will be a bugfix for that or if that will come when B42 stable releases

I got the same issues, and cannot use water in rain collector for washing

Speaking of plumbing, is there any particular reason we have to build a barrel a floor above a sink to plumb into it? I'd much prefer just having one on ground level and not have to build an ugly addition to my base just to get plumbing.

Umm...gravity.

Either way I hope someone makes a mod to sort it, or at least creates something to make plumbing look less ugly

Plumbing in real life works by pumping water into roof reservoirs. That's how you achieve pressure enough to actually have water flowing into your taps.

Making a ground level reservoir would achieve nothing because no power will make it flow into the connected outlets.

This. I would love a plumbing overhaul complete with wooden water towers and custom piping. Maybe electric or wind powered pumps if you don't want to be reliant on rain water. Rimworld has a mod that adds exactly this, and I think it'd fit well into Zomboid. Especially with the Indiestone's vision for the late-game turning into a sort of neo-medieival age.

I would too, My only real complaint about the current system is that you can only plumb using the wooden stuff which doesn't mesh very well with most buildings. I'd love to be able to find and bring back proper plumbing and water collection stuff back to base. like those large plastic water collectors people have tied to their home's gutters.

Yea it is kinda crazy that it only works for the 9 tiles above the sink.
Even when you have a 3 level house, a sink on the first level, nothing will work.
Gravity is bs, plumbing works on power so once you have a generator it MUST WORK.
I bet ya we get a mod if it takes to long for the devs to really figure out.

Actually all the pipes are underground and are being pumped up...
Even the water resovoirs are deep underground.

Plumbing in your country must not work the way the it does in the US. Supplying power to a house doesn't make the plumbing "work". In the US there will be a large central pumping station supplying water pressure to every building within several miles. THAT's where the water comes from.

Not necessarily.

A lot of water in the US is pumped into a water tower (or water storage on a hill) and the gravity from that water tower provides the water pressure to homes. So water would work for a while after the electric stopped. Depending on how many water spigots were left on of course.
