Hot take... vanilla helicopter event should be removed.
I'm just going to put it out there, I don't really see the point in the helicopter event anymore. Most players but the absolute newest of us know how to deal with it, so it isn't really that big a deal after your first few of them. And, prior to B42, no doubt most of us were playing with extended helicopter events anyway...

But the vanilla helicopter event makes no sense to me. If you were up there flying away, why would you follow the only (known, current, on the ground) survivor around dragging all the zombies in the area to them? Surely, after the initial, "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, there is a survivor, we should help and/or follow." You would see the millions of zombies coming, and just leave before you get them eaten.

The Helicopter is a staple of Zomboid at this point, removing it would be akin to Mario having his Hat taken away or Sonic not having his signature red shoes.

I disagree, almost entirely. A lot of people use extended events in single player, multiplayer servers don't usually have it and after a few play throughs it becomes a minor inconvenience rather than the crazy shock it was the first time you encounter it. It would be akin to removing an annoying enemy, or at worst, the first boss from one of those characters games.

2 discussions below this one, not written by me "I have never been a heli guy, so I turn it off"

Just turn it off, then.
Removing the event for everyone simply because "you" don’t like it comes across as a bit self-centered.

Like I said, I don't care about it. I don't see it as a big problem or the point of it. What I would prefer is a helicopter event that makes sense, not a helicopter that follows you around for no reason and then disappears forever.

Also what is with all this, "turn it off in the sandbox settings" ♥♥♥♥ we are seeing on the discussions so much lately. We're on a general discussion board, for discussing opinions.

Lastly, why would I care that I am coming across as self centred? It is a discussion literally labelled as a hot take... almost like I knew it would be an unpopular opinion.

I dont agree with you, in 42 with how zombies are now along with the stealth system I already got my self killed by it trying to hide in a building, Its pretty fun. Besides that I use it to move hoards around when I base out by the edge of town so i keep it on sometimes. I didnt use that many mods in 41 and since 42 I havent even thought about mods and have no intention to.

Mod creators are there for a reason to add flavor to people who want it. Not everyone uses mods

no its not working like that. The Helicopter guy don't know that the Heli noice would attrackt Zombies. However that event is important to shift the zombie horde around the map. This event has tobe there and you can turn it off. Just turn it off if you don't like it.

Instead of outright removing helicopters, they could implement something like the Expanded Helicopters mod did by having some of them drop supplies, some be raiders, and so on.

having an army helicopter shoot a horde until it is out of ammo and then you never see or hear from it again could be cool in and of itself ... but imagine it comes back LIKE A YEAR OR TWO LATER and rescues you and there is an actual "end game" ??? yes/no?:questionNV:

If he is following you, he is looking at you, and he can see it with his own eyes.

Yeah, something like that would work, or you can find it crashed on the map somewhere. Or somebody over a loud speaker trying to give you directions to something such as a safe zone or an evacuation point. Make you try and write down notes at the same time as avoid the horde. :mimir_lol:

We're dealing with distribution that puts a lot of zombies on things we need like gas stations. just dodging the helievent is one way of doing things. Personally, I'm looking forwards to yanking a thousand or so zombies into the deep countryside, leaving them there and then grabbing the defenceless loot.

FWIW I always assumed the helicopter was a newscopter and I was being filmed and shown live on TV in an area clear of infection. I've met enough journalists in my life to know they don't care what happens to the people that get them an interesting story. Some piers morgan wannabe in a heli isn't going to turn off footage just because it could end with the subject being eaten. He'd just be seeing the awards.

It has to be there, yet you can turn it off? Also, it happens once in the first 10 days, then never happens again, why don't the zombies need moving around the map again? I know that is the devs party line, but something is not adding up here.

I have been playing since 2013, if I want to complain about it, I will.
