maintenance exp is effed
I've killed over a hundred zombies in a couple days and I have a whopping total of 5 maintenance exp. Apparently it doesn't proc on 'multiuse' weapons anymore, or maybe it procs on weapons being damaged? It wasn't great before, but now there's crafting skills locked behind it and it's even slower. What's going on?

dude thats gross. i guess the crowbar debate is over, it's now completely worthless as a maintenance-levelling weapon

EXP is from weapons only, not "weapon/tool" or "material/weapon" items.

No, they were hammers... the ones that are Supposed to give you decent exp :)

So with the wooden spear, that you cannot make because you cannot get a solid supply of wood due to not being Maintenance 1 to craft axes to obtain said twigs without wandering isufferable amounts through forests?


Its not balanced, im sorry.
Ive played for too many hours that i want to admit on b42 unstable, and just because i didnt start with +1 i'm at a gigantic disadvantage for what feels like several IRL days.

Pretty sure those are just tools or weapon/tools now. They won't give maintenance EXP. It's only given from "Weapon" items.
i have no clue how to level maintenance other than just.. getting lucky with weapon drops i guess? Do axes still give maintenance? Those are tools too

Fair, i thought i read somewhere hammers do give you the exp

In build 41, you could xp maintenance by pushing and stomping zombies as long as you had a weapon in your hand. That's no longer the case in build 42, which is probably the main reason why it takes so much time now. The other ways to xp the skill should give more xp to compensate for that loss.

This is patently incorrect. I gain Maint experience on my toon when using Club Hammers, which are labeled as Tools/Weapons. You can see the difference with just two zombies in my save Here[imgur.com]. The only change related to XP on this world is a x2.0 global EXP rate instead of the vanilla x1.0 rate. I have zero mods that relate to skills and EXP hooked on this world.

Do you know what's going on, then? I've been using mostly one-handed short blunts and my maintenance is, well, single digits after more than a hundred zombies smashed. Is it just obnoxiously low without modifiers? I don't remember it quite being this bad in b41

I haven't busted out the -debug tools to really get into the brass tacks on if skill gains have changed between builds. It should be that Maintenance only procs XP gain when the weapon doesn't lose durability when the chance is rolled. That's what has made the Crowbar and tree chopping the reigning kings when it comes to Maintenance training. Youtuber retanaru has a great video breaking it all down.

I'm only speculating, but: It could be possible that durability chances have been tweaked for certain weapons, and they're not ticking the XP gains like we're accustomed to. It's also possible that some weapons are simply bugged right now and aren't giving XP like they should. I've already submitted four bugs in the past 24 hours to the IS forums; the build is in a pretty unpolished state at the moment (As to be expected, not even a week into the Unstable branch)!

If you can give me a list of weapons you're using, I'll be more than happy to spin up a throwaway world to test them myself and see if I can replicate the lack of XP gains.

i started at 1 and am 3 rn, only got 74 kills most of which were without weapons, im using a 2x xp modifier for everything. im still on the starter baseball bat, having repaired it once after putting nails into it. but having 4x total xp gain doesnt make up for the difference between 5 total xp and 300 total xp, something is fishy here

From what I recall, it was iron pipes, frying pans, griddles, hammers (2 ball peen and 1 claw), and tree branches. I also used them down to their handles and when they 'broke' (since some of them now break down into handles before breaking for good).
