Has anyone on B42 managed to tan hide into leather?
So, since we got all the outdoorsy stuff with B42, I decided to try to make an outdoorsman character. Out of sheer luck, Bambi decided to watch me set up camp. Also out of sheer luck, the devs gave us all pistols to start with. I now have an unprocessed deer hide and I can't seem to do anything with it, nor can I find any building or crafting recipe that seems like it would fit the bill.

I have a tannin barrel, but its input is leather, not hide.
I have a medium drying rack, but its input is tanned leather, not hide.

So, right now, as far as I understand it, the leather-making process goes like this:
Kill animal -> Butcher/Skin animal -> ? -> Tan leather -> Dry leather

Can anybody fill in that missing step for me, please?

Okay so this is a problem with the new menu system and separating building and crafting menus. It's confusing to players.

Open the build menu from the list of icons in the top left of the screen. It looks like some bricks and a trowel. What you're looking for is probably the "softening beam" It's used to scrape hides so they can be further processed into leather. From there you will likely need to use your tanning barrel. I'm honestly not sure if there are steps beyond that.

i think you gotta scrape the hide first

Yeah, that would make sense, but I have no option to do so. I wonder if I don't have the option because I don't have the right tool for it or something.

Yep, you're right! I needed a softening beam and a fleshing tool, apparently. I was a dingus and missed it in the description for the unprocessed leather - it literally tells you what you need. The softening beam can be crafted, but a fleshing tool can't - at least, not by hand.

All this to make a friggin' sleeping bag. Outdoorsing is hard.

You can find sleeping bags. I've found a few.

Yeah, I found one (plus a whole tent) on the first b42 playthrough I started yesterday. That's what gave me the idea to try to do a run where I start from nothing and build everything as an outdoorsman. My character is in constant pain from muscle strain, exhausted because he can't sleep, sad because he killed a deer (thanks reluctant warrior trait!), and bored all at the same time. So, it's going great!

How you pick the tent???
