Is corpse management over, bros?
B42 corpse dragging system basically seems to scream: don't waste your time trying to move corpses, it will just take three times as much time as it did before and make you vulnerable in the process. And, apparently, we can't even put corpses in trunks anymore? Or did I miss a context action on that? Dragged one to an empty trunk and nada

The fact that this is now being combined with a more sensitive smell system, and how quickly we get winded from dragging corpses... Do the devs hate us more than previous builds? Did someone forget to sacrifice their firstborn?

EDIT:
Adding a follow-up, since I made this post I've managed a ``semi-feasible`` strategy for corpse management in B42. It takes some time, but it works. Shout out to the homie who reminded me that grave digging is a thing and that 5 zombies fit in a grave.

When clearing zombies from in and around a designated base area, I'll split them off, lead them into spots at the edge of the yard, and kill them in a specific spot until there are 5 corpses in an area. Then I'll change where I lead them to a different spot 8-12 tiles away from the first, until I've killed 5 there. Rinse and repeat. Sometimes it's time consuming to lead them on, especially the slower ones, but it's nowhere near as time consuming as it would be to drag them. Then, once I have a shovel, I can dig a grave right next to the piles of five corpses so I do not have to do much dragging, if any.

This is actually good for vanilla Apocalypse combat as well, as long as you are not in a heavily populated zone, because it encourages you to peel individual zombies away from groups and deal with them somewhere that the combat noises will be far less likely to attract more. I've been reproducing this strategy successfully for a while now while clearing out some of the gated residences at the south edge of Muldraugh. Naturally it will not work as well further into Muldy or god forbid West Point, but if you are trying to set up bases in either of those places in a singleplayer run, you're not going to have the action economy for corpse management in the first place, especially on vanilla Apocalypse.

TLDR: Basically you have to bypass corpse dragging entirely by luring zombies into future grave sites and killing them there instead. Even if you don't have a shovel yet, if you have to kill zeds in a base area, drop them in groups of 5 over diggable terrain, come back and grave them later

I'm pretty sure there's still a lot of room for improvements in the build. It would be interesting if we have to cut the body in parts to make it lighter, though yeah I hope not being able to put corpses in cars is a temporary removal.

Was surprised how quickly my character was exhausted just dragging one corpse a short distance from my house. I always felt it was a bit "gamey" that we could throw them in a bin or cupboard and just forget about them (or delete them) but this feels like its way too prohibitive to shift corpses a safe distance away. You would be too tired to run/fight after moving only a couple of them.

I'm completely running off my imagination here, but I bet it'd be cool to have like, a wagon you can craft or something to cart off bodies like you're a knight in the bubonic plague or something

There were trollies in some mods that you could find in stores. You could maybe use this in the future if they add these to move bodies.
That is nuts if thats true. You should be able to haul corpses in truck beds or cargo vans.

Maybe I'm missing something. Doesn't look like it though. Trunk door is open, inventory is empty, and I'm right in front of it. Hopefully it's just incomplete and there will be additional actions doable while in corpsedrag mode.

I think I see the problem. Thats a wreck so it could have reduced storage space. You want to try it on a fully functioning vehicle in better condition.

It could also be bugged being that its the unstable release.

Trollies/carts were basically just containers capable of carrying large objects, i.e. 40+ encumbrance, same as vehicle trunks. Picking up corpses used to turn them into an object-- albeit one that was extremely heavy-- but still an actual object, capable of being put into a container capable of carrying large objects like fridges and such. The fundamental problem we're seeing now is that corpses don't seem to have a way (that I can see?) to be treated as an object at all.

Possibly, yes. The trunk has room for 52 encumbrance in its current state. I thought corpses were 40 but it's been a while since I played prior build.

Moving corpses drains your exhaustion waaaaay too hard, especially the short distances my average strength character just dragged two corpses lmao. Dragged them both like 10 feet.

How about dragging bodies onto Campfires?
Grubnick Dec 17, 2024 @ 8:37pm
Here are a few things I noticed with corpse dragging so far - it needs improvement.

I dropped a corpse at the top of a stairs and could not pick it up again. The character tries to drag it by the legs but the stair railing gets in the way.

Dropping of corpses is way too slow. It is game over if you happen to get jumped while dragging a corpse. Cannot move away and are vulnerable for a long time while dropping it.

If you press the run key, you drop the corpse instantly, so no need to press "drop corpse".
Akadai Dec 17, 2024 @ 10:10pm
I'm in the "clean up" phase of my new base and am now discovering I can't seem to find a way to get rid of bodies. I actually don't mind the dragging of bodies, I think it's neat and immersive. Dropping them should be faster. Dragging them around maybe slightly over tuned on exhaustion. I just don't know what to do with them now other than pile them up somewhere out of the way. Burn them I guess? I've always been weary of using fire cause of all the horror stories I've seen revolve around it

I will say this though, dragging a dead weight body is a lot harder than one might think. I've had real life experience moving bodies for search and rescue, and it is not easy. It is much harder than just lifting a heavy box or something, especially if you're of a smaller/lighter build

You can dig a grave with a shovel, each grave can hold 5 corpses.
