How do you lock a door?

I'm fairly new but I've built a base on a public server and was wondering how I can lock my doors/chests. Thanks

You need to find the key to the doorknob. Before you destroy the door to get the doorknob try and find some zed with keys in the building. Then right click on the door and see if you have the option to lock it. If you do, then you have the key to that doorknob. Destroy that door and take the doorknob and build your door out of that door knob. Don't mix up your doorknobs. ;)

For a chest, you need to find a padlock.

I made my own house, so would that mean I'd have to find a padlock for the door or are padlocks only for chests?

Please re-read my post. Making your own doors requires a 'doorknob' that you get by chopping a door down. If you grab a doorknob from a door that zombies knocked down, then you will not know if you found the key for it or not until after you build the door. You find doorknob keys on zombies in the building where the door is.
