Please try the following:
Right-click Project Zomboid in your Steam library and go to "Properties".
On the "General" tab uncheck "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game".
Now go on to the "Local FIles" tab and hit "Browse local files..." to get to the installation directory. From here, start the "ProjectZomboid32.bat" file (it has blue gears for an icon by default). If the game crashes again, take a screeenshot of the command prompt/windows console thingy, upload it to a site like imgur.com and then link it here.
That will hopefully tell us what's wrong :)
I have 8GB of RAM and an AMD R9 290 with 4GB of VRAM, so the error might be related to a system or bios setting i have? not sure.
You've likely played Minecraft in the past and adjusted the RAM it can use.
In the Windows Start menu, type "Edit System Environment Variables" without the quotes.
See if you have a _JAVA_OPTIONS, JAVA_OPTS, or JAVA_HOME variable.
If you do, delete them.
3picM00b is using a ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, which are most likely not compatible. His error message is "Pixel format not accelerated" so he will try to update his driver, though the chances are low of that helping in this case, since AMD dropped support for that series of graphics cards.
