I've been using dice rolls lately thanks to the addition of the full set in game
Get a police or ranger outfit and catch any zombies that are violating the rules you've set forth.
I can recommend this

Usually I play like:
- first phase aka 1-2 months is waiting for help
- then looking for help
- then despair to look into help
an odysee from Rosewood all the way up to Louisville
depending on the mood restart at any death
giving your character some backstory so they have something to react with to a situation. something that gives them more priority then just holding out in a house.
as for why would you ever leave your base once set up? there's a million reasons why a sane person would. I would have to know, are there any other survivors out there? your survivor has survived the initial outbreak, there has to be others somewhere right?
at the end of the world, with manufacturing on a large scale down permanently, can you ever really have too much toilet paper? lighters, ect? (I cant start a fire with 2 sticks to save my keister can you?)
how would your survivor know that there is not the mother of all zombie hordes slowly migrating in the direction of your home?
does your survivor know that there is not a group of baddies eyeballing him and all his
loot. maybe planning to come and kill him and take his stuff?
maybe your survivor had a nemesis before the outbreak, someone who still might be out there... someone who would certainly take advantage of the current lawless situation and do you harm if he finds you? maybe it would be best to try to find him first.
do you have enough supplies and capacity to help another group if you were to find one?
what happens if you live long enough to get old? or sick, or injured? do you have what you need to survive long term if your immobilized for some reason or other?
even if you cant go out on loot runs anymore?
what happens when your current fueling station runs out of gas? or what if your generator blows up? what if your house burns down? what about tornadoes, they are not in game yet but do exist, and do happen in Kentucky, do you have a fall back strategy?
these are just a few, if you think about it im sure you could come up with many more.
I also find keeping a journal of the thoughts and insights of your survivor helps to stay
in character.
the important thing is to eliminate the knowledge that you the player knows that your survivor couldn't possibly know. I do this with all of my survivors, with coming up on near 5000 hours played mostly mod-less it keeps the game exciting, terrifying, and satisfying
like no other game I have ever played.
the more you practice keeping yourself in your survivors head the easier it becomes.
good luck and have fun.
It's really hard for me because every time my character swings and misses, they look up out of the monitor at me with that WTF glare, like it was my fault or something.
Screw that 4th wall penetration. I duck and point to my kid, "he did it." and keep playing like nothing happened.
My last experience was the AI giving me a quest to goto the Louisville gunstore at the mall to retrieve my dad's shotgun that was being worked on. It was his last dying wish to have him buried with it.. Obviously I had to rp a bit, but it was interesting.
