That's what you are after I think.
It is sort of immersive in that you are reading a former survivor's journal to get the skills back. You need to update it fairly regularly.
There are options to reduce the percentage of experience you regain on a new character, and more.
But you're point is good. Normally combat is like chess. Not really random or chance, but the direct result of the moves you make. With walker and fast walker zombies, you will never be hit as long as you keep moving and don't walk right into them.
Also, making a new guy on an old world is a lot like having sex with your friend's ex. It's a thing you can do, but it's better to start fresh with someone your friend hasn't already slept with.
