Spear are kinda hard to get but Giant brunch sounds like a good idea
Giant brunch, a new world story event where a bunch of pretentious hipster zombies are gathered together to pay 3x the price of breakfast to get breakfast. You are handed an automatic shotgun as you enter along with a shells bandolier.
Anytime you hit something with a weapon, and it doesn't loose durability, you gain maintenance experience. I dont think crafting any weapons will give you maintenance exp from the act of crafting.
most Assemble recipes in version 42 do give small amount of Maintenance Xp (5 for Stone knife, others 1 except for Mace), though those need Maintenance 1 to use

Hmm, I wonder if putting together a bunch of low grade spears would be a semi effective grind in that case. Grab a sapling, carve it for carving exp. Grand a flint, knapp it for knapping exp, assemble it into a spear, for maintenance exp. Use it till it breaks for combat and maintenance exp.
Do planks still count as blunt weapon?
Yeah, getting to Maintenance 1 is a grind.
In the beginning you can probably only use crap weapons like branches, stones, bones, or whatever else nature provides.
You can also carve broken branches into stakes and use them as weapons as well, so you get double use out of a branch.
And you didn't pick wilderness knowledge because...

Agreed. Wilderness survival as a perk is my new must-have in B42. great stat bonuses, recipes pre-known, old herbalism included. Start with maintenance 1 (and bonus to maintenance exp)
