calories feel off
just curious if anyone else feels like the calories on most foods feels really low? i've gotten into taking the nutritionist trait on my most recent runs and it just seems like a lot of food really aren't as calorie dense as they should be. either that or the "fullness" you get off each piece of food is too much? like you cook a roast using a porkchop and a few eggs and its only like 1000 calories but you can't finish the thing in one go if you're being economical.

IRL, there are only about 75 calories in 1 egg and about 250-700 in 1 pork chop, depending on the preparation and cut. Its probably a product of strictly using IRL numbers for calories, that'd be my guess.

yeah the more i think about the more i think that maybe i'm being too economical with how i use my food reserves. if you add some meat and veg to make a soup you're going to be nursing that throughout the day because its a ♥♥♥♥ ton of water in addition to your foods but the only calories you will really get out of it is strictly what you added, hence even though my character is full they aren't getting as many calories as they should.
i suppose maybe my main gripe then is that the devs should allow more foods to be added to a pot of stew/soup/roast/stirfry?
You can add as many condiments you want to any of those cooking. Butter and oil are the main source of calories for those recipes as well.

If you really want to maintain your weight while remaining active every day, dump meat product to a cooking pot and add those condiment. Chug the whole pot whenever you start feeling hungry. And you'll maintain your weight just fine.

If you need calories, go find a fishing rod. Fishing is blatantly op for calories.

One fish caught with 0 fishing skill can have more calories in it than several cows butchered on a hook with max butchering.

It's a problem that the calories in food are low.
But I think the biggest problem is that the calories required by survivors are too high.

-2200 kcal is the minimum.

That means you'll lose weight unless you eat a calorie bomb with more than 2200 kcal for dinner. Simple, a whole stick of butter.

If you want to gain weight, you need another 2000 kcal. Another stick of butter.

There's no point eating it for breakfast and lunch, because it will be consumed immediately in combat with zombies, bringing your calorie count down to -2200 kcal.

In conclusion, I think that if the -2200 number was raised a little more, the balance would be better.
The main problem with egg calories is that you could have a full day's worth of calories in eggs (about 30) but it'll take you all day to cook them. I should be able to start my day with a five egg omelette that takes ten game minutes to cook, because eggs cook fast.
Instead, there's an omelette that does cook fast, but has ~<300 calories, so just arresting weight loss means spending two hours making and cooking omelettes every morning.

Unless you have butter, of course.

Alot of calories are not good or item accurate
Yogurt being 30 when it's closer to like 80-100

Cooking several meals takes time, but not all day. Can put several pots or pans full of ingredients in the oven all at the same time, and read a book while it cooks. I collect bowls and make portions of stew I throw in the freezer. Did that in build 41. Works the same in 42. A few game hours goes into cooking a week's worth of food. There's so much food in build 42, I've been going for daily jogs to level running plus not get fat. Take nutritionist trait. Make a stew. Look at the fat content. Now add a slice of butter. Watch the fat content of that stew go through the roof. The leanest cut of meat and 5 radishes will make you fat doing it that way. One bottle of mayo goes a long way as well, when added to salad or sandwiches. One pack of hotdogs, one pack of hotdog buns, and mayo, will make you fat. Those three have been common in every run I've tried so far.

My main issue are the candies, their calories are waaay too low, to the point of absurdity. I'm using gummy bears to lose weight. I should not be able to lose weight by eating nothing but gummy bears.

Can eat 1000 calories in one meal, but if there's no fat content in those calories, you'll satisfy hunger but not gain weight. A serving of gummy bears has 0.5 grams of fat. Bag of chips has 45 grams. Eat a bag of those and chase it with a bowl of stew with fattening ingredients like butter, and you'll be fat in no time.

So many people posting blatant misinformation....

The only thing Project Zomboid cares about as far as whether you can gain weight or not is Calories. Fat and carbs only effect how fast you gain weight if you have enough calories.

Try it for yourself. Take nutritionist trait and see the numbers for yourself. Any time I've added fats to my foods, I've gained weight or kept it balanced, quite easily.

"It's because the nutritional value of food beyond calories has an effect." Like adding fat to those calories.

Have a good one.
