How does the new fishing even work?
There is no explanation nothing. It seems to me like I have to reel in fish with the left mouse button, but as soon as they come closer to shore, the makeshift fishing rod just turns into the red and disappears when I have an actual fish and not a seaweed or broken fishing cage on the hook.

Do I have to move left or right somehow? I don't get it?

Does it make a difference whether I put an actual hook and/or fishing line onto the makeshit fishing rod?

Why does the entire rod disappear?

Does sitting down make a difference?

Does cutting filets now count towards fishing, butchering or cooking?

Does bait make a difference? Is cooked bait better?

One youtube video would teach you the entire mechanic in maybe 2 minutes, why not start there?
google didn't show me any new ones for b42. are they there alreay?
If a game requires you to research stuff on youtube in order to be playable, that's a concern. Ideally things should be either intuitive or have explanations provided in game.

i'll just make you one. easy.

fixed my microphone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQLHRFmhlHY

also there are two in game tutorials for fishing. one on the fishing menu when you right click a body of water and click on "fishing" and a second one in the survival guide which is opened by pressing F1. youtube is not technically required.

Pretty sure it's a click and release minigame right?
The rod disappearing is probably either a bug or the rod's broken.

Not sure about the rest. At least in b41, bait matters. Each bait has specific types of fish it can lure.

There are in-game instructions that you can access from right-clicking the water while having a fishing rod in your inventory. Old players would notice it right away since that's how fishing used to be done. And like Bomjus mentioned the F1 guide covers a lot of things, new players should give it a good read.

Why does the entire rod disappear?
Actual fish will actually pull away and increase the line tension, so you can't pull continuously with left click or it will break, press right click to lower the tension away from the red area and start reeling again with left click when the fish gave up pulling. Imagine playing a racing game, don't accelerate the whole time and learn to brake.

The rod disappears because it breaks from tension. Makeshift rods break completely, while proper rods only will need changing the line. Manage the tension and the rod won't break.
