Just like Minecraft, use Google to get some reference images for post-apocalyptic bases.
You can pretty much pick up everything that's not nailed down for decoration.
The rest can be done using mods.
practice makes perfect man, start with a little rinky dink shack and think "how could I improve this, even aesthetically?" at that point its good to look things up if you can't think of anything, but otherwise just keep practicing. games like minecraft help you channel that creativity.
It's not as easy to do in Zomboid but I've found that building with the terrain really helps. Using irregularities to mold the base makes it look interesting and forces you to get more creative. To this end the bridge next to West Point can help with this or building along the coast and then building up and over the water. There are several islands in the game that can be fun to build on.

Alternatively you can use existing structures like using a storage area and hollowing it out and connecting spaces etc. If you want to build completely from scratch try something with the design like one big tower, or a ziggurat. Maybe build replica of the Hagia Sophia, Cologne Cathedral, Osaka Castle, or even the Gateway Arch. Or just build a big square box but with lots of random rooms and then give them themes i.e. workshop, medical, radio room, etc. (That's what I normally do lol)

I finally came to the conclusion that you build your base 'around' a single generator. And remember, you can build upwards around the generator if you need more space. I have a hospital and a communications room on top of my base.

Then populate it as you would like. The majority of my base is a warehouse.

And if you want to use tiles you normally cannot pickup and transplant to your base you can use the -debug tool to copy tiles and paste them at your base.

Yes, there are only a couple zombies that ever spawn there as it is remote with rivers on both sides.

I was going to make this base available for others, you should be able to move the files to your save game and it will be there. But i would need some testers for that. In my testing the buildings all seem to transfer fine to your save game but the container contents seem to go bad.
