Why do maki and onigiri require avocados?
crime against humanity that this is not an optional ingredient

Onigiri with avocado and Spam(tm) is, strangely, a tasty snack but the only ingredients that are required to make a basic-b**** onigiri are rice, salt, umeboshi, and nori. Even if the umeboshi isn't available, that lack is not a show-stopper. I have made onigiri with just salted rice and rolled the ball in toasted sesame seed, along with chopped nori that I keep on-hand to sprinkle on yakisoba, ramen, udon, etc.

TIS might not know of this or they got their recipe from Musubi Cafe Iyasume, in Hawaii.

Surprised anyone in 1993 rural Kentucky would even know what an Avocado is.

Most exotic food they had was Chef Boyardee.

This is a good point too. The avereage kentukician sustained themselves on poptarts, smoked meats, and chef ya-boy-ardee. The ♥♥♥♥ they doing making canadian sushi.
