Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid

SOLVED: Mods not showing up (B42)
I never used any mods in B41 so I don't have a feel for how mods are supposed to work. But I found a couple mods for B42 (.1.1) to try, I subscribe to them in Workshop, and then launch the game... the only mods that show up are a handful of Pillow's which I believe came with the game.

I've tried unsubscribing, waiting, and resubscribing. No change. I've cleanly relaunched the game quite a few times. No change.

I'm not certain where the downloaded mods are supposed to end up in the file system, but I checked the following two paths that seem relevant:
- SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid\mods
- %userprofile%\Zomboid\mods

These locations both just have a folder named "examplemod" and a tiny text file, but no files related to the mods I subscribed to.

I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but I'm stuck. Any help?

Mods start disabled. Once subscribed You have to enable them in the mods UI in game too. To get them working on an existing save you also have to load the save with the load option rather than continue, and click the mods button for the save to edit the mods in the save.

Thanks for the response.

The mods UI in game is where I'm talking about when I say they don't show up. There are only four (Pillow's) mods showing up there, the same ones that have always been there but none of the mods I have subscribed to show up in the game UI at all.

Hmm, odd. My guess is its a steam issue, maybe steam isn't downloading them? Workshop mods go to SteamLibrary\steamapps\workshop\content\108600
108600 is the id for PZ. There will be a bunch of just numbers folders in there which are the id's of the mods. Inside those folders are the mod files.

OK, excellent. I believe I saw a thread elsewhere referring to numbered folders which could be relocated to get things working. I'll explore the folder you mentioned and report back if I figure out anything useful for others.

Will probably try restarting the PC and see if that makes a difference.

Many thanks, SDxEair.

Just checking back in to update: rebooting the PC (my idea) didn't fix anything.

I checked the 108600 folder, and the only numbered folder underneath it is one which contains the various Pillows Many Spawns mods (which is consistent with what I'm seeing in the UI). So I think you're right, it's an issue where Steam isn't downloading the mods I've subscribed to.

I'll continue to troubleshoot and will update here if/when I get it solved. Thanks again for the help.

I noticed some of my subscribed mods vanished from the mods UI in game when the new update came out. It could be that some version incompatible mods don't show up. Maybe the mods you're subscribed to have that issue?

Thanks for the reply, BooDaddy. That ended up not being my issue but it's a smart thing to check for anyone facing this issue.

Alright, issue solved, for me.

Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache

When I did this, I briefly saw a pop-up saying "Stopping Project Zomboid download..."

So indeed, something was stuck. When I cleared the cache, Steam restarted afterward and immediately the correct mods began showing up where they were supposed to (and I can confirm, are working in-game too).

Hope this helps someone, thanks!!

its a version issue - the mods that show up are for this patch version - the others are outdated - thats one of the reasons to just wait for stabke to build your modlist

it didn't help :(

Also didn't help me 😔
It happens to me once but I'm on SteamDeck. And the problem was the mod using capital for the "Common" folder. Once I change it to "common" then it appear on my mod list. AFAIK linux is case sensitive.

.... Mods are made for the "Stable" build 41.x... not the "Unstable" (Beta) ver. 42. That's why "most" MODs dont show up in your Game.
