They do hear you fighting their comrades closer than they used to so you have to pull a bit further back but overall its a buff to the survivor on day 1.
Second crowd management is a must now , you must yell sometimes and lure them away from a key location , then break multiple lines of sight or jump a tall fence and double back. There are other ways of dealing with them like setting off a police siren etc but learn the basics first.
If your thinking no no not early game im talking 15 - 30 or more days in then you probably know what to do your just too tired of grinding to do it , lay on the horn lure the hoard away and then come back or again find a diversion vehicle to lure them out or come prepared to kill them all.
Go to Westpoint, Riverside, Rosewood. Any of the old cities (cept MD). You will be fine there.
Return to the new cities once you have leveled a bit and are better armed.
Yes, I prefer sticking with defaults too, but these new defaults S-U-C-K. They make exploration a giant PITA and I decided to swallow my pride when I realized it was taking me three freaking days just to get from the fire station to the first intersection before the grocery store in Rosewood.
There is a time and place for slow/steady chipping away of zeds at places like the Grand Ohio mall in LV. That time and place is not ALL THE FREAKING TIME. Zeds with high hearing turns every melee blow into the equivalent of a B41 gunshot.
This is, I'll assume accidental, gas lighting. Crouching invisibility behind low fences is great, but visual stealth is still busted overall and the new standing spotting mechanics with cars cuts both ways. Zeds with high hearing makes melee attacks like gunshots compared to B41. Random speed adding slow shamblers to the mix exasperates the "fights never being over" problem and makes it a giant PITA to herd zeds away from stuff.
There is nothing "more powerful" about not being able to get the grocery store before the food rots.
Strength and weapon skills. Maybe fitness.
With just the strong starting trait, I can melee about 100 a day no problem. (Just casually killing and looting) If I had guns and some levels in aim I could probably do way more than that.
And as I level my weapon skills, that number is only going up.
You HAVE to learn to manage hoards in b42 , now the small convenience store the zippy mart good luck getting in there , there are soooo many zombies along the part of the drag between the court house and the book store even trying to lure them away i eventually used two cars to run them over and i still had to clear about 100 more through combat.
Have tested this and works a bit better but I didn't try spawing in certain places such as: Cabins, woods and rural areas.
Change these settings: Population distribution, lower the pop, put more time on respaw, don't pick an initial spawn point and don't add sprinters, their % is broken too.
It's gonna be a bit better, trust me.
Some are saying here that zombos now tracks noises easier. Can't confirm this yet since I haven't done testing but just to be safe: Set their detection options on normal ( don't remember how exactly it's listed on the menu it's there along with their sight, resistance and what not).
You are correct they hear your combat sounds closer now than before so you must peel them a bit further away , however they dont see as far away as they used to and they dont have perfect vision in fog and rain at all anymore.
So its a bit of a mixed bag , you gotta be more careful of alerting their friends from sounds but less likely to have them all see you.
Dont forget you can always strategically set off a police siren or ambulance to lure them away from where you want to go. Can of gas in a clunker you find the keys for and run over zombies until its engine is dead is also a nice way to deal with zombies just make sure you have a nice exit plan to your actual car.
