bait?
What bait do you use for fishing? I used to pick up worms using a spade but it doesn't seem to work anymore.

Do you have an easy way to find bait?

Have you tried any of the insects and other arthropods that can be found while foraging, or the maggots that soon appear on the zombies whose un-lives that we Alt-F4 during a save?

I found some worms using the spade to till the dirt. Even on common loot settings it appears to be very rare that you find a worm.

You can use insects you find when foraging. I also found a jig lure in a house that I use as bait.

I typically use maggots from zeds (spawns on bodies after a few days dead), and once I catch some fish I just fillet them and use bits of the fillet as bait. Food from fridges like meat patties or steaks can also be used.

By the way I have yet to catch any fish using the small bait fish in B42, either I'm having some bad luck or it's bugged. It was fine in B41.

Collect Maggots from zeds. Not extremely effective as bait, but you can collect dozens.
Use Fishing Nets to catch small fish.
Filler tiny fish you catch (1-2 Hunger) and use them as bait.

Make sure you let your character finish the animation to combine the bait insect with the rod to create the "Fishing Rod with [bait name]" item.

When I first started fishing in B42, I interrupted my character while he still had the insect in his left hand and the rod in his right (which is how it worked in B41) and got really frustrated because I wasn't catching anything except seaweed and way too many broken fishing traps.

I found worms by digging. Seems the chance to find them is less than b41.

In 41 I’d just spend like half a day digging a really long furrow and then removing it. After that I’d have about enough worms to last for like a weeks worth of fishing every night.

The best passive way to get bait is through the fishing nets. Make chum with a bag of sand and various edible ingredients liek fish or bugs. Add that throught he "add chum" after placing a fishing net on the shore. This will give you a handful of different fish and things that you can use as bait for your fishing rod. As for the worms you can definitely still get them with digging furrows BUT i feel like you get more the higher your agriculture skill is so that might be the issue (this is just something im assuming from what ive seen i might be completely wrong)

Cockroaches, caterpillars, beef, fish, anything that says can be used as a fishing lure.

Btw, how do I open the fishing menu? It opened automatically the first time I fished but not anymore.

I use bugs at first

Then when I get into the higher range of fishing skill I use Fishing Tackle and Bait Fish

Turns out you don't need to. Just bait the hook, equip the rod with both hands and "attack" the water, you should cast the line. When you do, let go of right click. Holding left click reels it in, holding right slackens the line. Once I figured it out I actually like fishing now. I loathed it in b41. Thanks for the tips too guys, I had no idea you could make chum.

I've found that any insect works great...most baits I have are from foraging, if it doesnt work some food also helps like cheese and beef I've done this from level 1 fishing from the tv and with a makeshift rod Im currently level 3 in one of my runs abd Im getting those fish that wont fit in the fridge

*puts a spoon on a spear*

*gets 3 times as many fish as just using a spear*
