By the way I have yet to catch any fish using the small bait fish in B42, either I'm having some bad luck or it's bugged. It was fine in B41.
Use Fishing Nets to catch small fish.
Filler tiny fish you catch (1-2 Hunger) and use them as bait.
When I first started fishing in B42, I interrupted my character while he still had the insect in his left hand and the rod in his right (which is how it worked in B41) and got really frustrated because I wasn't catching anything except seaweed and way too many broken fishing traps.
In 41 I’d just spend like half a day digging a really long furrow and then removing it. After that I’d have about enough worms to last for like a weeks worth of fishing every night.
Then when I get into the higher range of fishing skill I use Fishing Tackle and Bait Fish
Turns out you don't need to. Just bait the hook, equip the rod with both hands and "attack" the water, you should cast the line. When you do, let go of right click. Holding left click reels it in, holding right slackens the line. Once I figured it out I actually like fishing now. I loathed it in b41. Thanks for the tips too guys, I had no idea you could make chum.
*gets 3 times as many fish as just using a spear*
Yum, 17,000 calories of fishy goodness.
