Is there decent base building in this game?
I love base building/survival games and I am wondering how the crafting and base building is in this game? Do you just pick on of the already built houses to live in or can you add to it and craft defenses and other things?

It could be awesome but not there yet. It’s okay tho. Too many quirks to say it’s worth to build a base ground up and it takes a long time. You can’t build defenses other than barricade windows and doors. the zombies will attack structures build by you if it’s in their path.

So most just settle down in an existing building. You can place items down and position them on surfaces. You can pick up furniture from other locations and reinstall.

Many games out there that do a great job. Valheim and Minecraft are my two favorite base build survival games.

It's honestly my favoured aspect of the gmae. B42 needs some tweaking but can still be nice. B41 has a good base building system though and you can control how in your face the zombie population numbers are.

Typically though by the time you've finished building your base you really don't need much in the way of defenses unless you get certain mods, such as Horde night, night sprinters and few other mods that add extra defenses >: ]

I'd recommend it if you like base building and zombie but be warned there's a high learning curve.

Base building tends to be a goal rather than a means to an end after awhile. That is to say, after you have done a certain amount anything else will transform from a matter of survival to one of taking more risks to make your base even better. Its pretty good. I have only built a full base by myself once or twice, i usually pick a place and start to fortify and add to it over time. Its one of my favorite parts of the game, finding a cool place and figuring out how to make it suit my needs.

You can do both effectively. Building in a prebuilt house is easier than making a whole house by scratch, and farming+carrying wood is a bit of a pain without mods. But there are multiple ways to make your base zombie proof than some people may consider "exploits", like destroying the stairs with a sledgehammer and using sheet rope to enter and exit your base. (zombies can't climb). Certain building objects like planterboxs cannot be targeted/destroyed by zombies, so are op barriers.

tl;dr base building in this game is good. There are lots of variety in base locations in the entire map, such as secluded lake houses, roof bases in Louisville (most populated zombie area), warehouses, apartments, etc. Finding a good base location and developing it is one of the most enjoyable parts of the game imo.
They are objectively exploits. It's why I didn't bring those up. lol It's also a bummer to lack proper base defense.

One thing that is not so obvious is that the map is huge. Going town to town takes time. Encumbrance plays a big part in this game so you'll be making several trips. You do have creative freedom to make as many bases as you wish so you may have safe spots in various towns. Expanding base and experimenting with them is a popular goal to have.
if you like building toward sustainability this is a little complicated but good. you can move furniture and deco with items, game's best defenses are exploits.
