As far as how to start blacksmithing without being at the lakehouse... first you need to make a primitive forge and furnace (Build menu). Pretty sure most everything you need you can find/forage in the wild. You'll need tools to use it, and you'll see which ones when you try, but some of those can be easily made too.
Once you've outgrown the primitive setup, just move out to the lakehouse NW of Muld. It'll be a fight to take it, but it will be way easier than building your own advanced forge and furnace
Oh yah... Pottery? Just getting into that myself. I think we need to make a Kiln and get a lot of clay.
