Project Zomboid

Dying in my sleep B42
So, i was extremely tired and ended up finding a semi-safe spot to sleep. 20-30 minutes into the sleep my health rapidly started declining and i couldn't manually wake myself up. I ended up at "terminal injuries" when i woke up. I looked around, no zombies. The only moodlets i had was bored, sad&uncomfortable (slept in body armor made from magasines)

When i fell asleep i think all of these were maxed out.
Can you die from boredom and depression now? They used to do nothing so i mostly just ignored them.

Edit: (Added b42 to title) I survived. Since the only bad moodlets i had was depressed, uncomfortable and bored i ate cake to cure my sadness&get the regen buff, stripping off my armor (Only magasines, no spikes or anything) and getting out of there.

I slept on a couch inside of a storage building (first and only floor, no basement) with a corpse outside of the room i slept in (closed door). Inside the building were a generator (turned off).
The only moodlet i had after eating cake and undressing was bored (enough cake solves depression :D), hadn't had any nausea, cough etc and still don't (2 days later).
My character was 81 in weight, so not malnutrition. No berries or mushroom in diet.

I think the primary suspects here is:
1. The generator bugged so that even if it was off, it still messed with the air in the building
2. Corpse sickness bug? Shouldn't be acting when there's no bad smell
3. Something regarding uncomfortable moodlet? Hasn't harmed me prior to that, but it's a new mechanic. Who knows if something unforseen triggered some mechanic the devs haven't fully launched?

I don't think you can. It must be something else.
Maybe it is the new discomfort mechanic that causes this.
Some time ago my character woke up with neck pain several times when sleeping while wearing the hard head.
So armour with even more discomfort might make it worse.

Neck pain after uncomfortable sleep was already a thing in B41.
B42 includes uncomfortable armor into that, but there is no way that is the reason you died. Also no death from boredom or depression.

My guess is either sickness or poison? Did you maybe eat something bad?
were you sleeping on the ground floor? if not it might have been the bug i just ran into of zombies being able to bite you thru z-levels
Yeah, I should call it an expanded mechanic rather than a new one.
Discomfort now has its own moodle plus equipment causing discomfort.

Btw. if the health loss was due to zombies biting through the ceiling his character would have had injuries.
Going by his retelling he didn't have any related moodles, though.
Was it maybe caused by a generator running inside the building?
Is it 'bad smell' from corpses? You can get killed from corpse sickness. I don't think I ever died from it but I heard about it. In a recent game I killed enough zombies near the 2F bedrooms that I still got 'bad smell' coming through so went elsewhere to sleep.

I was sleeping in a storage unit fenced in by high fence with a door closed to my storage unit i was in (found a couch).
When waking up i panicked and saw the red moodlets for sadness, boredom and discomfort with no obvious signs as to why i was losing health. Thirst was at the first stage and so was hunger.

Thinking that it had to be either the sadness or the discomfort i stripped off all my armor, stuffed my face full of cake for the increased healing modifier from being full, and due to cake making you happier.

I don't know if my health stopped dropping the moment i woke up, or after i got rid of the bad moodlets, but it did, and slowly started regenerating, even after i put my gear back on and the full modifier disappeared.

Checked the perimeters and no zombies close (and i was on first floor), the health menu showed no wounds and no muscle strain.
I have now lived 1 full day after this with no indications of anything being wrong.

There was a generator inside the building in another room but it wasn't running. Maybe some kind of bug where the game thought the generator was running? I sat on the couch reading for about an hour before i fell asleep, so it feels as if the health should've been affected before that if that was the cause :/

Edit:
When i first entered the room i killed a zombie and had the bad smell moodlet, but knowing that they could be bad i dragged it outside the door (still in the building, just a door between the body and the sleeping arrangements for the night).
This did however get rid of the moodlet so i figured it was enough. Maybe a kill spot needs to be bleached or something even if the bad smell isn't present?

It should be fine to sleep in a room with some blood without the bad smell moodlet. I've killed a zombie in a bedroom doorway, wasn't sure if it counted as in the bedroom or not so I dragged it away a bit, so I slept in a bedroom with two dead zeds just outside, probably a little blood in the bedroom, with no bad smell moodlet and there wasn't any problem.

I heard corpse sickness has been heavily ramped up in b42 though so depending on your circumstances at your sleeping location this might have been it.
Doesn't corpse sickness spread over the whole floor?
Not sure about this, since I usually get the corpses out of the building before going to sleep.

What's your character's weight? Was he starving before the cake?

most likely underweight, i had similar experience and only valid explanation was that character weight was too low

i believe you ate unknown mushroom or unknown berry by foraging in your way to a storage unit fenced in by high fence with a door closed! same thing happened to me recently.

Haven't started foraging yet so no unknown mushroom or berries.

I feel like this might be the most valid explanation, but if that's it.. The moodlet really has to change so that it's always there if it's a bad place to be

Unless the sleep introduce some space-time continuum altering bug, in 42 it is kinda impossible to die due corpse sickness even while sleeping. Unless you also had a whole load of rotten pork or something.

The last stage moodle (overwhelming stench makes you ill...) will slowly accumulate "food sickness" parameter, which in 42 hard linked to "sickness" parameter with 2:1 ratio.
To reach even 50% sickness you would need like 20-30 hr of ingame time while sitting atop of corpse pile, and the char start to lose health only after 70+ sickness...
In 41 the ratio was 1:1 so twice as fast.

On the side note, you can use surgical mask to get flat reduction to that effect. as well as some other face covering items. It will tone the moodle level down and drastically reduce the sickness accumulation. Then you can sit on that corpse pile a game week and feel fine.

It actually heavily nerfed and twice as long now.

Were you wearing any spiky armor?

I noticed I would sometimes lose a good chunk of health (slowly) every once in a while after wearing spiky armor.

Not sure if the armor is doing that or if something else is. But it seems similar.

Also noticed that you can't recover from a bad cold anymore. You sneeze and cough forever, even after the moodle is gone.
