If you want to melee fight then being strong, athletic, and having some bonuses to melee weapon skills will jumpstart you there.
If you want to use guns, then being brave and having some starting skills with firearms makes you waste less bullets.
If you want to build, then being a fast learner and metalworker will make you use a lot less propane maxing that skill out. What makes metalworking harder to level is the lack of propane, so if you can save some on training, you'll have more left over for building.
If you want pvp, then engineers are the only ones who can make motion sensor pipe bombs - which are good presents to leave by people's cars and front doors.
Crafting skills can be leveled up fairly easily even in B42, but combat skills requires direct contact with zombies most of the time. And no matter how hard you want to avoid it, you will need to fight eventually anyway.
I recommend taking Strong and Organized as mandatory traits. More things to carry without weighing you down is always good. Fit/Athletic is also good, but more optional.
After that, you can take any traits that complements your chosen occupation's specialized weapon skill. Hunter for police and veteran, for example. Because the higher the starting skill level, the better.
For negative traits, you can take the usual free points like Weak Stomach, Thin Skinned, and Prone to Illness as default selection. Just avoid Pacifist at all cost, IMO. Other than that, you can pick any traits you think you can manage just fine.
