Zombie Awareness is absolutely horrendous now
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I can have 12 stealth and a zombie can track me through 18 closed, metal, windowless doors. What were ya'll thinking with this update?

I was slow stealthing in the middle of a forest and zombies were catching awareness of me through an entire screen and no LOS of distance. This is laughable. (No concipous perk, nothing that makes me more visible, not sprinting or jogging.)

not true, stealth is actually pretty good

you should play on sandbox with settings that are the most appealing to you and then play on more difficult modes

IMO the game modes apocalypse and survival are where they should be, its hard but thats the point. this should be hardcore survival. There is no other thing than surviving and not dying so if you remove this game gets boring and repetetive.

Stealth does not work like in skyrim so does crouching in zombies sight

Were you dirty/bloody? That could explain things, they can smell you if you don't keep fairly clean. As for the forest, if you touched any branches they could've been drawn to the noise.

Nope, that was never the case. Smell has been removed from the sandbox options too, as it was never functional in the first place.

But yeah sandbox is the solution here. A bug was fixed that gave them negative sight, it's something that needs to be adapted to.

They're still zombies at the end of the day and we're all smarter than then with simple tactics, but difficulty is back to being "how it was intended" after being lost over the years.

if they ever add smell they need to make blind a thing, so that they can hear you and if they get close enugh they can get you by smelling, god that would be awesome!

(yes i like to suffer)

Personally I'm really enjoying the difficulty. Have been gradually increasing mine with every attempt. I started off with weak zombies, though I did try to balance that by giving them max numbers, and then bonus points for myself. Advanced to the point where I made them tougher, kept the numbers, trimmed my own bonuses as I go. Personally I think the game is great for this. People want to jump in running with hardcore rules before they can even walk.

Any mods used?

Since for me sneak works wonders once i hit level 5 light footed and sneak (with inconspicious).
The zombie awareness seems pretty busted in general in the entire game. Zoomed out all the way, they can almost notice you the whole screen away, with little room for error in movement to avoid hordes aggroing. Only being able to target one zombie in combat is limiting with the amount of zombies, their numbers should really be turned down- along with spawn rates. Having to re kill zombies repeatedly in the same area is a waste of time and not fun at all. It would be nice to be able to play on multi player servers that are more casual friendly that are official servers, and not filled with mods or 'hardcore' settings. As a new player, it is pretty overwhelming having to only play sandbox and set a hundred settings for the game to be playable.

Yeah their awareness is pretty intense. People are going to suggest you use Sandbox to adjust the game how you want, which is what I did. You can also adjust anything you would like, from their speed or memory (probably helps break aggro sooner? idk) to their cognitive ability. You can make the zombies more active at night or day... or just leave it at both. Basically if you want a certain type of zombie from any of your favorite movies in this game, you can probably make it happen.

I dont really know what you guys are talking about, just bought the game and have been playing sandbox with everything like the apocalypse setting except the zombies respawn that i deactivated, it's hard at the begining but you just gotta crouch and stay some meters away from the zombies.
@PuffyTheMagicalDragon

You can alter zoom levels in the options, multi-hit in the sandbox settings, and zombie count and growth in the sandbox settings. It really is quite straightforward, and there aren't many settings you need to touch.

I am actually guessing that many folks are using mods and it may likely break the awareness somehow.
Because i never encounter what folks are talking about. Of course every now and there there is a Sentinel type of zombie, that is able to notice me from really far away, and it only is troublesome should it be the group leader. (IF a group leader notices you and goes towards you its whole group will!) However i am guessing that these Sentinels just roll that 01 (COC rules) or nat 20, and no matter the chance they succeed the detection check:)

Veterans trying to defend the current difficulty, lol. In all seriousness tho, difficulty settings should be tweaked/lowered, not so great for the first impressions of the game currently.

Yeah i believe memory is basically how long they care about you once they lose sight of you
