Chunkdata - How to get additional information?
Greetings everyone,

As some of you may know, the savefiles of a savegame in Project Zomboid save chunks of the world as files with the name "chunkdata_xx_xx.bin" - now my big question is, how do you know which chunk/tile is which?

I'm asking because we are running a server that has been running for a long time. Sadly we're unable to add map modifications to it without "restarting" the world / therefore wiping the map.

Our idea is to copy paste the "chunks"/tiles that we've built our bases on into a new map with the map mods enabled, that way we can get a fresh world / map additions without having to wipe our homes that we've built up over literal months.

Does anyone know how you can find which tile data is which ingame?
It would greatly help us.

Thank you.

Select ''Map Coordinates" and hover the mouse over your bases, the cell grid ll tell you the chunk file. But i dont think its the chunk file that you need to do what you want. Its the map_xxxx_xxxx files, where x ll be the coordinates. Well just grab both to be safe.

The coordinates of my base are 5011x8003. One of the points, that is. There's not even a map file with numbers that high, so I don't think htat's the right thing we're looking for.

However, the "cell" is 16x26. What do I do with that information? It might be chunkdata_16_26??

Yeah, its chunkdata_16_26. You dont count the last number, it should be map_501_800 in this case, you need all the mapxxxx xxxx files that cover your base area. Try doing this with the mapxxx files and see if it works before bothering with the chunkdata files, ive never had to copy them.

I just found this.
You seem to be right, time for some experiments..

Well, good luck and always backup everything to be safe. Another way you can do that is to create a new game on debug mode and teleport your char to your base area, take a walk around and then see what map files were created/updated.

I remember doing something like that. It was very complicated and annoying to copy the files, at this point I think we'll just stick to making regular backups of the entire map and see where it goes. Limits the risk of issues too.
