Can you eventually run out of ammo for guns?
I just used about 8 boxes of shotgun shells to clear out a new area that I wanna loot and the question just dawned on me. How likely is it to run out of ammo on the map? Should I be saving ammo or is there an over abundance of it to where I should just shoot to my hearts content?

I think zombie loot has been slightly improved in 41.72, once on a zombie besides finding a 1911 there was also a box of 9mm.

Damn, you found a BOX on a zombie? most I ever get is a pistol mag full or 5 shotgun shells. I usually just empty the ammo and drop the weapon.

There's a bunch of ammo, but it really depends on what you're wanting to use and when. Shotgun and 9mm will be incredibly common, can be found often enough in homes and warehouses, and scavenged off of the dead.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em. You'll (probably) find some more.

If you're using guns to kill zeds, you probably need something around 200 rounds (shotgun) or 1000+ rounds (anything else) for one single engagement. It doesn't do you any good to shoot a couple dozen zombies only for hundreds more to show up, so you need enough to kill every zombie in earshot in one go. Getting 5 or 6 shotgun rounds every blue moon from a zombie isn't going to help much.

Occasionally you might have a slightly smaller horde show up and maybe you won't need quite that many bullets, it's still orders of magnitude more than what you can actually find from zombie loot. You could simply use the gun to attract the horde and then lead it off somewhere else instead of killing them all, but in that case you aren't using guns to kill zeds, you are using them as noise generators.

Everything can be a noise generator if operated (in)correctly.

You can occasionally still just find cop zombies that have shotguns or pistols that you can unload. At least get a few rounds from them. But there are multiple locations on the map that have multiple boxes of ammo.

Its possible to rarely scavenge ammo directly with foraging, managed to find guns and even a box of 5.56 with it.
And i dont mean anywhere specific i found these while blundering around in the back woods for sticks, stones, bugs, food and herbal meds.

Yes it is. In single player

Just like Animalman said I would tend to agree. In singleplayer, you can run out (mostly). Also as said here :

So technically you won't run out but it's so slow to gather ammo that way.... you might well be completely out. At that point, guns are noisemaker and little else.

Although, for fairness, I'll point out that the map is huge and there's a lot of cities you can go to get more ammo. So before you truly run out it'll take a while. It's more a question of "What's nearby" and the nearby stuff is limited. In Muldraugh, there isn't that much ammo other than 9mm unless you get lucky from the small police station armory.
