how do i get wood/planks ?

You can get and axe and chop down trees or you could find them in warehouses,sheds,creates,etc.

If you chop trees you will need a saw to turn them into planks. You can get planks from doors you break down too

One of my best methods of doing this before fidning an axe would be to grab your hammer and go smash down some doors. It will usually give 1-2 planks, 1 doorknob and 1 or 2 door hinges. Kind of a pain in the ass, but by far the best method if you are missing the saw or the axe. It is obviously a little loud though and those planks are really heavy, so best to do it close to home in somewehre that is already cleared out. The bad part about that is that it doesn't give you any nails, so you have to find those elsewhere. Storage facilites tend to be the best for nails, but they are also some of the most dangerous places.

Its best to get wood away from your home because you could potentially attract a horde that may have spawned in... If you wont take my advice on this, just be carefull and do a perimeter search around your place before getting wood.

While you can get planks by bashing down doors. Chopping down trees and then using a saw to make planks is much more efficient. You'll get a lot more planks from a tree then you will from a door.

Ok, I have a question. Where can I find a Saw, where can I find a axe, and lastlly where can I find some nails? Also, what's the best time to really start crafting and such? Ok, what I mean is, should I start at a specific time? Like for instane, is there a certain place I should build, a certain skill or item I should have to prepare for living in a home made house in the big ol' woods.

Most tools tend to spawn in crates and boxes. There's also warehouses and toolshops that have a good chance of containing the tools you require.

As for times and locations of building, that's the beauty of sandbox - when it feels right, and when you find an appropriate spot. However, it helps to get your carpentry skill up for longer term survival - in order to build rain collectors - but reading a beginners carpentry book, barricading and walling off an area around a house or structure you quite like will help with this.
