Maybe the game spotted you guys doing nothing in this area for few day and it decide to send a bunch of ''entertainement'' :D.
You're fundamentally misunderstanding the problem. Even if they didn't kill him as he's up safe the server would grind to a halt under the weight of dealing with so many zombies on screen and involved at once. Being on the second floor doesn't help that.
I'm probably going to come off as a ♥♥♥♥, buuuuuuuuut:
The helicopter event is one big event, something around 20 helicopters or so. It represents an aerial evacuation; a likely thing to happen in the event of a zombie disaster (heads of government and such would be the first to get choppered to an airstrip and onto a jet). Sometimes it bugs out and will happen twice in a week. Not as likely, but still plasusible. Sometimes it bugs out and happens back to back. Video games make mistakes sometimes, too. If it continues to happen I'm sure the devs will look over the script again and fine tune it.
Secondly, and maybe most importantly, if your entire plan revolved around one base than you were doomed to fail sooner or later. Secondary fortified positions are just as important as a primary one. If you'd lightly barricaded a nice, out of the way home a few blocks from your main fort you'd have somewhere to get yourself together and formulate a plan of action. Losing a fort is part of the game; so is either moving on or getting it back. Refusing to budge isn't smart.
There never should have been so many zombies? How can you say that when this is a game that literally gives you almost complete control of the zombie population and how they behave? It sucks that you lost all that time invested in the fort, but the game is far from over. I get why you're mad, honestly...but you can't pin the zombie population numbers on anyone else. Get your butt together and go take it back OR just copy the map onto a new server with an adjusted zombie count.
Also, eat cake. You'll feel better.

Now, continue missing the point everyone and trying to say how good you are at the game.
If a game forces me to cut my losses, me & my friends to scatter in a panicked run, 2 of them get their faces eaten right away while I manage to break through and die about 6 hours later huddled in a stairwell desperately hoping the zombies don't hear me ....
Well played, sir, I say .. well played indeed.
Do we want to mindlessly click, gain a level, click some more, gain more levels, always being about 10% stronger than any particular threat in the universe around us ? That's MMO thinkin', people !
