On when I play SP only, off when play with NPC mod. Preferred ON in MP.

It's a main aspect of the game. Always on.

You can also put zombie infection only on bites.

Try the antibodies mod, it's OP but, a middle ground between zombies can turn you, but only if you don't look after yourself

Always on. There's no thrill if it is off.

If you're getting killed all the time and ready to quit playing then by all means, turn infection off. The point is to have fun not adhere to some cult-like code of honor. When you can get around without zombies even able to touch you, which will happen once you are familiar with the ins and outs of combat, then turn it back on so the game can properly punish you for making a wrong move.

My current game is bite only. Even still, I get worried. I initially started my character to mess with mods, and he was a “burner” that I really didn’t intend to care about. Fast forward like a month IRL later, and he’s still alive, and probably has the best stats of any other character I’ve made. Reallllllly don’t want to lose him. Losing all that time that’s spent working on skills is really the bummer. I know there’s mods out there to cheese it but….ehh.

Looking at they new, I think it's much better than antibodies, no guarantee you'll get the cure, but we'll worth playing on following a bite to try and find one

In some of my older runs I have it completely off, mortality wise, with all infected so my deaths still turn into zombies. but in my most recent saves, I have it enabled with the default lore settings with the susceptible mod on for a more, brutal difficulty, and quite honestly.

I've come to like it. as much as it renders the first aid skill near-useless since you'll die to a scratch if RNG hates you, there is something about taking every zombie encounter serious.

plus if you play with a minimal fitness and strength build character, it really changes the way you play early game.

lol - yeah, that is always a danger - i have had several characters that i started just to test stuff who ended up living long enough that i started to play properly with them - and once you have some decent stat increases and some good stockpiles it can start to get to where it would be sad to lose them

which i think is part of the magic of the game - there is a choice to use mods, or backup saves, to make sure that progress isn't lost and so that you can see more of the later game - but without that, it is proper rogue like rpg mode - where your character has value, and it is a tragedy when you lose them - but where you can then start a new character in the same world and at least retrieve some of the value from the safehouses and stockpiles that your previous characters may have made

personally i play most of my games with one life - and in Fallout 4 that means many restarts after stepping on mines or getting molotoved on the face, sometimes self inflicted, and often when my character is seriously high level and geared up - and in Factorio losing huge bases when i go all gung ho on a biter nest in the late game and lose - and so it's nice to play a real rogue like where perma death and starting a new character in the same world are the intended way to play
