How do I stack small bookcases?
I know you can hit R to raise the crates to stack them, but that just turns the small bookcase...

You can't. There's a small and a large for that precise reason. Same with the shelves.

yet they hold the same amout of items, that doesn't help any, I don't want it for looks, but for extra space in a small area.
