Personally don't think vehicles will ruin it too much, I think it would ruin the looting of the town by foot which is a great experience but it will get you from one town to the other because if you try walk that it does take forever.

It probably would work really well if if you drove into a town then you get swarmed quickly and they will just annihlate you and your car. Forcing you to only use the vehicles on the zombieless roads between the towns.

i agree that vehicles will have to be ballanced very carefully in order to not ruin the experience. they must draw a lot of attention, get swarmed/flipped/destroyed easily, and most of all, gas should be very scarse. this is a staple of the zombpocalipse. finding gas... cars become pointless very quickly. and then there is the whole idea of seeing the wrecks all over the place. its sort of odd that there are no cars left on the roads, or in parking lots, or driveways. they should be everywhere, and most of them should be ruined, or burned out, or smashed into stuff (another staple of the zombpocalipse). you should have to constantly be getting out and trying to clear the road (which sometimes should be impossible) in order to get anywhere. also, cars are another source for alarms.

personally i want a bike! it leaves you vulnerable, but its quiet, and should help to build your sprint skill. that said, they can break easily, and if you fall from one (say by running into a zombie or wrecked car) you should get hurt, possilby fataly (or near enough. you beak your leg, youre done for).

I'd take State of Decay as a good and bad example here:

- I think the vehicles in State of Decay are done awfully. They have really bad handling physics, accelerate near instantly, they're everywhere, always working, always fueled, fuel isn't really a concern, they have auto-repair (with a base), they're essentially the best weapon in the game etc ... so I hope Project Zomboid does a better job with them, which I can't see them not doing as they really were just so bad in State of Decay that anyone with two brain cells could do a better job.

- I think the NPCs in State of Decay add so much to the game and are the core reason of why It's a fun game to play, all other aspects (combat, looting, survival) are inferior to Project Zomboid, however I think overall State of Decay is in a far better place right now as a game just for the interaction of the NPCs and the depth that provides.

So then in this aspect I hope they get the NPCs AT LEAST to the State of Decay level (although from what I've read they on paper intend to do more) and Project Zomboid would become a truly astounding game for it.
I think the vehicles in SoD are fine.. For SoD. But yes, they way they are handled there, would not be good for PZ IMO.

I share your oppinion about the vehicles in State Of Decay. I hope they are going to be very carfull with vehicles and do not make it to overpowered. I hope they also develop bad (character) NPCs.

Bikes would be great! Can you even break your leg in this game?

In my opinion, I think cars don't really ruin much of the experience,

1) Cars need gas, and as you can see/play in PZ as of the moment, GAS IS HARD TO FIND, I'm a month and a half already in my playthrough and I still haven't encountered any gas tanks. so that being said, you won't really use cars as much as expected, maybe only when going to far places. You'll be forced to use cars when only needed and maybe add a fast gas depletion mechanic just for the reason to make it hardcore.

2) Cars are noisy, damn, just remember everytime you set off an alarm and you see a bunch of hordes coming from all directions at you, making you forced to park on a further spot, still forcing you making you to walk to your destination .I'm pretty sure this will be implemented when vehicles are released and maybe make the noise so "zombie bait" that it reaches a wider arc that a lot and I mean A LOT of zombies will come after you just for the same reason to make it hardcore.

3) and just imagine going back to that same car that you just used, that was very noisy is surrounded by hordes and hordes of zombies. How in the world will you get back to that?! (I'll probably walk home and go back for it after a couple of days though lol)

4) Make it that per area there are only atleast 2-3 cars that are working, so they're hard to find or so far way(just like the well)

5) add modifications, repairs and customizations :D add spikes and stuff!

with that, I honestly believe that it won't really ruin the game lol.

as for the NPCs, I just wanna see a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the world lol. I mean just like fallout with bandit camps and ♥♥♥♥! damn! those places are fun to raid :D think of it this way, a gun fight between bandits in a school, and all those gunshot noises! How many zombies would be attracted to that?! then(If ofcourse doable :P I understand how hard it is for the devs to do these kinds of stuff :) add an ai that can also defends themselves from the zombies, making you and them forced to team up with each other to defend yourselves, then killing each other again?! that'd be fun :D

If you put it that way it sounds fun. I don't hope they make cars so overpowered that you easely can kill a bunch of zombies. I would also like to see trains moving or something with the railroad. Now it is just there without a reason. Sounds fun to raid some bandits. PZ online was too hard for me. Everything was already raided and it is hard to find some friends.
KromeHWI Jul 1, 2014 @ 7:29pm
exactly! i think the biggest ballancer will be the noise cars make. like a moving alarm that keeps going off for as long as the car is running drawing every zombie in the area lke a dinner bell... as long as you let zombies wreck the car (ie dont make them indestructable), but instead be able to run over a handful of zombies at most before the car stalls out and cant run anymore... just think about what happens when you hit a single deer and total your car. now multiply that by a few dosen full sized human bodies smackin up the front end and its not hard to imagine the damage...

also (re: captmmapm) i love the idea that even if you park you car on the edge of town and walk in, by the time you get back to where you left it, there would undoubtedly be a large swarm of zombies in the area, making a clean getaway very difficult indeed!

implement these factors as well as making cars that are already fuled/working very rare indeed (while keeping gas at its current rarity as well), and the obsticles on the roads (making it hard to drive anywhere without constantly having to get out and move stuff out of the way, all the while fighting off the swarms of zombies you have attracted with all the noise you are making), and vehicles will be just fine... which is to say, not actually all that good at all. as it should be... otherwise they could well break the game.

RE: NPCs

they will add so much to the game it will be amazing! some will be nice, but let us not forget, that in any good zombie story, after a while, it is not the zombies you fear (you can deal with them, they are brainless, and thus easy enough to avoid/trick/manipulate), but it is the other survivors that quickly become the greatest threat. they want what you have, and will be willing to do anything to get it...

its a ruthless world once the trappings of civilization are gone. its kill or be killed, dog eat dog, every man for himself, and everything goes because there are no more laws or rules except that you will do anything you can to survive. you may get lucky and find a group of people who take you in and help protect you (and visa versa), or you might get skull-f**ked and eaten for fresh meat...

which path will you choose? try to keep some seblance of humanity, or shed it, like so much dead weight?

and then, even if you do chose to take the high road, what happens when you catch a stranger scouting your camp? let him go, or murder him in cold blood? and even if you do kill him, will that stop his friends from coming? maybe he was just lost and hungry, a wary of murderous savages? or maybe he's actually scoping your defenses, and only playing nice until he can run back to his buddies to tell them where you are and what supplies/weapons you have...

now personally, the importance of this kind of complexity in an NPC system can not be underestimated, or halfassed. which is to say that i am completely fine with the dev taking their time on this. i want to see the survival/crafting/farminng/trapping/fishing/character building/etc. portion of the game well pollished before they add this extra layer. and when they do, its gotta be done well or the whole thing will fall apart.

from what the devs have said they want to do, and have been working on for a long time, it will be amazing! take your time! do it right! it will be well worth the wait!

I would like to see more buildings added with different layouts.

I've played the demo of Zomboid enought to understand each body part takes damage. Do something like that with cars in this game, something like DayZ mod did. But instead of making car look drivable but aren't.. Find a reasaon to have them not work.

Liiiike, what was stated up above. Crashed, and or totalled. Sounds reasonable enough, yes? But! Lets add some things to make it harder to find cars that work. Car garages may not be a good place to find cars that work, there for a reason :P Or cars that can be found out in the wild, will it work or was it left there and all the parts don't work just the shell of it?

Junkyards, etc. But like parking lots, you can find cars there, but maybe in panic! Accidents happen that damage a lot of the cars, crashed into other cars, lamp posts, or one that drove into a building. Also junk cars! Like real life, will it work or just stutter on you?

Driveways and roads same reason for the parking lot, but I imagine more chaos with the cars than a parking lot.

Now from reading patch notes about the bigger? Hordes of zombies, as well seen in screenshots, that can be more of a problem using them. Like when you're trying to forcefully enter a house that has locked doors, through well the door or breaking a window. Make it some cars are locked and to get into it, break it. And have a chance of it having alarm or not.
(Breaking glass will have a small sound radius then the alarm going off.)

Cars also make noises. And we know what zombies love, noises! Make em zombies flip dem cars like we do with tables.

Problem with gas, depends where you look. Gas stations? Yeah you can prolly find a lot of gas. House hold? Slim chances of that, may a gallon or two, but not a lot.

Looking forward to whenever npcs get re-introduced to the game, but I am slightly curious about about how npcs and how they interact with bases will be handled. Obviously, they will add a new dynamic - the potential for all your stuff to be raided while you are on a supply run, or them sieging you because they like your spot of dirt. Just hoping that there are going to also be methods of dis-incentivising their attacks without direct violence.

I'm not sure how well vehicles and npcs will mix, personally, especially considering how finite (and potentially scarse) fuel sources will be. (I am assuming we won't be able to access the reservoir tanks at gas stations via hand-crank and be forced to rely instead on item drops of 15 litre fuel containers)
KromeHWI Jul 1, 2014 @ 10:18pm
re: fireheard on gas
remember that the gas stations are the first places to run out of gas in the zompocalipse... classic zombie scene: trying station after station, to find they are all empty, then finally running out of gas some 20 miles from where you were trying to go... oh well, i guess we're walking... to bad, it was a sweet car... best bet honestly is to siphon from cars left in parkinglots or wrecks. just hope no one else already did...

good point about garages and broken cars tho :)
Carl Poppa Jul 9, 2014 @ 11:12am
Unless they add a lot more gas cans to the game, I doubt vehicles will ruin the gameplay.
