Trapping
Has anyone caught anything using a trap because I've tried quite a few times and my bait is always gone when I return

I have never caught anything using traps, no. That said I have only tried a couple times.

I have you just have to use the appropriate bate like for rabbits its carrots.
thats how i got this :deadrat:

I got a mouse with a mousetrap (tomato bait) inside my savehouse.
It gave me 3XP points, so it takes about 1 million years to reach lvl 2 trapping skill.
Green Jun 27, 2014 @ 3:38pm
The mice in my savehouse seem to love fresh tomato! I have set up three small mice traps with tomato and after one night all of them were full. The mice are so crazy one of them jumped into the trap right after I rearmed it. Atleast my fridge is now save :)

rabbits give alot of xp but there a bit harder to find/catch.

The zones supposedly deplete aswell, so if you keep catching the same thing in the same place eventually it should get harder.

At tleast thats what I've heard anyhoo.

Were did you set up the trap and what kind of bait did you use? Carrots are obvious but they are (at least for me) hard to farm. Now I use Cabbage which is also a legit bait for rabbits.

Did someone loose a trap? I have 20 traps and 3 of them disappeared.

There are a few post related to traping so ill bump the most recent one.
I have done nearly everything in the game but am struggling with trapping(have caught nothing)
For those that dont know these are the traps and what bait the animals take, apparently pulled from the recipe file. source http://theindiestone.com/forums/index.php/topic/8800-the-trapping-system/page-2

Rabbit Bait: Carrots, Apple, Lettuce, Cabbage, Corn, Banana, Potato, Tomato.
Squirrel Bait: Orange, Peanuts, PeanutButter, Cereal, Apple, Corn, Popcorn.
Bird Bait: Bread, Corn, Cereal.
Note: Can birds be caught yet?
Mouse Bait: Cheese, PeanutButter, BaconBits, Chocolate, Orange, Apple, Tomato.
Rat Bait: Cheese, PeanutButter, BaconBits, Chocolate, Orange, Apple, Tomato.

With no mouse traps i have tryed to catch birds in stick traps going by someone saying "Reflections on trapping after many hours: No crate trap or snare has caught an animal yet for me. Stick traps did well for catching birds though, and eventually box traps caught me squirrels and rabbits".

Well i used my 8 Cereal and got nothing, have no bread and plan on growing corn now so i can keep trying. Have givin up on wooden cage trap as after 10-15 potatos i got nothing besides a few missing traps.

So a few questions related to trapping if anyone can answer.

1)Do player made structers affect the "hunting zones"?. can i drop traps just outside my base in the woods and get animals?

2)Apparently you cant catch animals in zombie populated areas. how many zombies and how close to the trap do they have to be to scare the animals away

3)Do dead zombies deter animals?

4) how big are the "zones"? lets say the factory out of town south west of muldraugh is a "populated zone"(aka only catch rats) how far south can you go before getting to forest zone? over the road? before the road?

5)Are roads zoned? could i set up a base between muldraugh and westpoint on the road and still catch rabbit?

Thanks to anyone that can answer these.

1) Almost, you'll have really hard time to catch a rabbit in a town zone (town zone = house), but if you put your cage trap, box trap or any big trap in the forest, deep forest, or even vegitation, you'll have better time to catch Rabbit/Squirrel, same for mouse/rat, you'll have much more chance to catch them inside the trailer park area. Birds can be caught almost everywhere tho :)

2) It's not really a "how many zombie", well, it is, but hard to tell, it's more about the zombie density of the zone, and because some zone are small, other big, it's hard to tell.. But it just lower the chance of getting an animal, it's not because you have 10 zombies in the forest that you won't catch anything.

3) Nope, only "alive" one (well... alive.. for a zombie.. anyway :D)

4) Hard to tell, everyzone is different (I did draw all the rectangle for them according to the map), but as soon as you're not on the street and start to have some vegitation, it's not town zone anymore (except maybe sometimes i screwed up, but should be 95% ok), and as soon as you have some trees, it's forest, then when you can barely move in the forest, it's deep forest :)

5) They are zoned, but they are all considered as "NavZone" so you don't have much chance to catch something outthere, simply because I couldn't make the difference between a road in a trailer park, and one that lead into forest

Hope it answer everything !

Btw, I made the trapping a bit easier for the next version (maybe just for the hotfix which, should come soon but we have some trouble with release atm, but don't worry, I'm still working on the next update, lot of things done already, upcoming version thread will be there soon :))

I haven't played the game in a while, but when trapping was implemented I didn't find a single book for it. Have skill books for trapping been added yet or maybe they always were and I was just really unlucky?

Thanks for the detailed reply. Was trying to ask question to troubleshoot the problem but it might just be a bad zone?after i made the post i decided to give the traps a real go an grew 4 patch's/20 carrots and put em all in wooden cage traps but 17 diserpired and the other 3 are still in the trap(as it says remove bait)

Here is my base and where i set most of them up http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=280328825
And layed 6 or so scattered in the thinner lot of trees to the north east

On the Map my base is located here

with the scattered traps at

As i said though this was just after i made the post and my PZ just updated so ill be sure to try it and let you know if theres any success.

And a quick off topic queston that dose not warrent its own post and testing it could be costly..What dose it take to start a fire with a campfire?i know leaving something in there to burn can start one but the wiki says if you leave a oven on for to long it can start a fire and that makes me the same applys to camp fires.

If this is the case how far dose the fire spread? If i wanted to put a camp fire inside to keep warm while sleeping should i put it on a 1 tile square of dirt, sand or gravel? or in the middle of a 3x3 square?dose it not matter and i can put it on wooden floor? and how many squares away can i build crates/walls whatever safely

Ill be honest, zombies dont scare me. when i 1st got to the mall car park i pulled out my hunting knife and starting humming gonna fly now (the rocky theam song) and got 40 or so kills before getting to the mall(1/2 shotguns and 15-20 shotgun boxs later i own the mall)

But fire scares me

Thanks a lot for the trapping report, I'll see if there's any zone problem here, it may be tbh, I don't remember mapping this zone...
But as I also said, I made the trapping easier in the hotfix #2, it'll be public soon :)

For the campfire, the fire won't spread if it's outside, you set stones around the fire to be sure fire don't spread :)

For the Shotgun/Mall, don't worry, I'm currently working on the weapon overhaull, to be sure a shotgun don't kill 300 zombies with 4 bullets (no more bullet piercing, less spread, etc..)

Question, does the bait disappearing just mean the animals ate the bait and didn't trigger the trap or does it mean we're doing something wrong?
Dracon Jul 28, 2014 @ 3:32pm
I need to bump this.

I just saw that you can't put Birds (both uncut and cut) you catch in soups or stews is that intended?
Robert Johnson  [developer] Jul 29, 2014 @ 12:22am
Nope it's not, will fix it now, cheers :)
