Then just copy whatever save somewhere else. I still play "ya dead, ya dead" rules but it's called IWBUMS for a reason. Had some nasty freeze crashes and didn't always recover them so I got into the habit.
C:\Users\yourUserName\Zomboid\Saves and make a backup of your save there.
Thanks guys I'll give that a try.
I totally understand what they are going for, I love the feel and the spook aspect but I appreciate the help at having a better chance at more advanced runs.
But, I feel you. Nothing worse than sinking 30+ hours into one character, only to have it end because of a silly mistake (or worse, a bug)
0.0 My gosh there is a lot I need to learn about this game now. Map permanence?!
This spawned a lot of questions. I might make another post.
*Extra Questions*
That's a wonderful concept, is there a way to reset the map after a while?
And... two characters running separate saves on the same map, how does that work?
Does this apply to sandbox and scenario?
Also last night as I was looking through maps on the workshop. I noticed most add areas to the (a) pre-existing vanilla map. I also noticed most of the mods says that it adds to "the map" but doesn't tell you "which map" I kind of got the impression that the maps are somehow interconnected and accessible to travel in game. Am I way off on that.
Again it seems I have much to learn. :) Thanks for any help. I might even torture myself and scroll through some of the many years of updates.
I love savescumming too but eventually it feels false with PZ. You'll get there. I might double up the saves at the beginning of a day I'm playing, but if something terible happens I rarely even go to the backup because it feels wrong. I just strt over. And you can start a new char on the same map, recover your base, bury your old self, etc.
As far as the multi characters though, I have no idea. Just something I read somewhere around here, the wiki, or reddit maybe. But by reset the map, do you mean supplies and things? There's an option to let cells respawn items if you stay out of them long enough in the sandbox mode.
https://map.projectzomboid.com/ this is the only map I know of and if it's a map mod, yes it will get added to that overall layout in your game. Unless it says it's a challenge map. I personally have 23 more areas integrated into my game.
The ONLY other thing I can think of is something like Eris mini-map mod I think it's called. Could be something related to that.
I'll make sure to go put the old me's down XD.
By reset I mean mostly the environment. If the map is persistent how do you reset the environment, broken windows, fire damage, supplies, bodies, old you's, ect.
Do you just delete the old dead saves?
thanks for the link btw
As far as I'm aware, there is no way to reset the map, besides starting a new game. Although, now I think about it, you might be able to do it by swapping files around - whether or not it would work and be stable, I have no idea. The map is only persistent for that particular save, it's not persistent throughout all of your saves. It's better to think of your save file as your actual world, if that makes sense.
The having multiple characters on one save works like so. Go to the game you want to load, on the bottom right there should be a button saying "More...". Click that, and it should show you a screen with a button saying "mods" (this is how you change the active mods in a save file) and then a dropdown box with your characters in it, it will just have one name in it at the start. If you click new character, it will take you to the character creation menu, and you create the character as normal. From then on, anytime you want to switch characters, go to load your save, click "More..." and select your character from the dropdown menu. It applies to any save game, be it sandbox or a scenario [citation needed].
The majority of the modded maps are attached to the main map, I believe. I might be misinterpreting what you're asking, but all the vanilla maps are in one world. If you spawn in Rosewood, you can still drive to Muldraugh, Riverside, etc. It's one huge map.
Thanks a ton man! This is very very helpful.
No worries, my dude, hope you have fun learning the game! If you haven't already, I'd check out the beta branch for build 41. It changes a LOT about the game, and it should be going stable "soon". ("Soon" in TIS terms could be anywhere from a month to a year, but still)
