The new sounds
Any one else having an issue of barely being able to hear things when you're zoomed out? I'm really not digging having to choose between hearing the zombie coming behind me, or seeing the zombies in front of me.

after awhile i started thinking a lot of the "finished" sounds are with cars. Run some zeds over, it sounds delicious. Just don't have a cigarette while driving cause it sounds like you pulled out a full sized bong to hotbox the car. True 90s

Another thought about the startled sound effect, I think it might work if they disabled it when you have your weapon ready to strike. When a player has their weapon ready to strike they are probably expecting to come across a zombie through the door or around the corner so they wouldn't be startled to see it.

Mhh.. That is certainly one way to do it.
What an interesting thought!

I have to add that.. after hearing it and knowing when the game will play it while I have the situation under control, it is actually not that bad.
It'll probably scare the ♥♥♥♥ out of you the first few times but after a while.. Only a real surprising situation will actually get you to jump. Which sort of underlines that it is well-placed.

Absolutely right starship about the engine sounds, the RPM's sounded way to high for the engine speed and it sounds very wrong.
Also good point about the wolf sounds, I went to the country and was having Long Dark flashbacks, expected a pack of wolfs to jump me at any moment.

I made a topic about the high RPMs and new shifting patterns but it got merged, lol. I think because I was talking about how the sound was along side it but it's all good. Total agreement though. No one should be revving to 3 grand to cruise at 5 mph.

I have a 50:50 feeling about the sounds. Especially the driving sounds are not as good, as the old ones. It feels not like the 90s, but like a electrocar. Dash Bulldriver is my favourite car, so i only tested this one with the new sound - but, i don´t like it very much. Driving into curves - the wheelsound is very, very quiet. . Sorry for my bad english, but i hope you can undertand what i am talking about.

Are you zoomed in on the car, or zoomed out to see better?

Because they made it so you can't hear anything when zoomed out.

What? 90% of the new sounds are amazing. A couple of them could do with adjustments but the FRIDGES need to be fixed, they are giving me tinnitus
Nah man, there's some tonal issues with a lot of these new sounds and even the music.

For example the Title Screen music, the new version is less subtle about how it escalates and it doesn't feel frightening and melancholic as the previous music, it feels like it's trying to say "Hey, this is a scary horror game" instead of "This is survival game" and it doesn't have the same charm as the previous one because it comes off trying a little too hard to scare you.

You can notice a similar issue comparing the alert sound of the new version with the alert sound of the previous version, the previous version was a horn sound that trigger immediately the player "fight or flight" sense of alert, but letting you as well focusing in your surroundings to react.
The new alert sound in contrast sounds more like a jumpscare than anything else and it feels like yet another tactic to scare the player, and it comes off as well imo as trying a little to hard to scare you.

So personally I don't mind the added sounds, but there's some replacements that show that this new sounds / music don't have the same direction as the previous sounds / music, and it feels kinda cheap in comparison.

For me the new sounds sound like i am in a bathroom all the time, idk is like to much echo or something, i like em though but its that little bathroom echo effect thats a bit to much.

I haven't played in over a week so seeing this post is what clued me into the new sounds. So I just loaded up my game and started playing. Walking around with a nightstick right now and I really like it. I like the "ka-chunk" sounds that the UI makes. The ambiant noise is great. The zombies seem to make less noise in general from the few i've come across.
What I do not like is the sound of smoking a cig is the same. I don't know what you'd replace it with but if everything else got reworked, why not that too?

After playing several hours today (about 3 thus far) I can say the new sounds are excellent. Very immersive. Especially the ambient noises and the shift from outdoor to indoor. The jumps scare noise almost bounced me off my chair a couple times but it's good the way it is.

Just set up a generator.. and it sounds like crap. Also, FWIW, the sound isn't diminishing when it's walled in. But this new generator sound is all in the high registers.. the old one had a deep bass to it and *rumbled*. And seriously, I'm not hearing bass on any of these sounds. It's like they were all mastered with the intent of removing the bass.. or on a pair of headphones or cheap speakers.. or were recorded with a crap mic.

Even the sounds that didn't change *sound worse*. Something is seriously off here. Like with the level-up sound, there's now a new background noise to it and it's quieter.

I have semi-pro flat-response studio monitors/speakers, FWIW. It's really like you put a high pass filter on all the sounds and threw out the low range. And added a bunch of reverb and some noise (it does kinda sound like it's recorded in a bathroom, neverathome! :)). It's a big downgrade IMO. Again though, I think the ambient sounds in principle are a great idea and I kinda like some of them.

And the jumpscare sound.. scared the CRAP out of me. :)

There may be something wrong on my end to be honest. It always worked before, so I assumed it'd be fine, but maybe some of the audio code was changed, on top of changing the sounds? And so everything is mangled on my end? IDK. I can't figure out what I'd change on my end. I don't really have much control over this stuff for games. (the audio card is a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 usb.)

I mean anyone else notice how there's no or little bass on these new sounds?

I think the worst sound overhaul is the katana; it sounds like you're hitting a zombie with a bloody wooden block. But I have to say myself, those cars...phew, nothin' like hearin' them deadheads pop under your wheels :D

Granted, I reckon a few things still need to be ironed out, but honestly diggin' the new soundpack.
