B41's workshop offers much more than B42's workshop (a lot of B42 mods are just bux fixes, and B42 has only a few map mods in comparsion with B41. B42 generally doesn't dully support modding yet as well, the unstable and sometimes buggy way to port B41 mods in B42 doesn't count tbh.
B42 uses much more RAM than B41 does for many people as well, and that's why these people can have less FPS in B42 rather than they did when playing B41 (exactly my situation, but the devs said they'll fix this later).
B42 has a lot of bugs, like "animal apocalypse", so the animals on the farm may multiply so much that you'll soon have 1 FPS in-game, same may happen with rats wich sucks, a lot.
B42 has some "duping" bugs (like, for example, when you butcher a swamp rabbit's body wich is inside your backpack, you might get some raw meat, but the rabbit's body itself won't disappear out of your backpack and you'll basically have an infinite meat/food source enough to feed all of planet Earth's population)
You choose, but I sometimes play B42 only for "week one" mod rn.
Won't personally be playing B42, until they'll add multiplayer back in it, add full modding support like in B41 for both modders and mappers, and fix a ton of bugs that this build currently has, even after 1-2 bug-fix updates wich were already released.
I am right now trying to work out why sometimes I start and the zombies are so solidly packed that playing is literally impossible. It looks like a stadium rock crowd. Shoulder to shoulder.
No idea what I'm setting up wrong. I thought it might be tinkering with the spawn numbers, but not so sure.
Ok so we will decide not to watch life and livign and instead lets be spartan and nomadic cool , lets check houses for food in fridge , maybe one apple.
Ok same idea lets hit the fire station for an axe , in 4/5 runs the firestation had zero axes in it .
Fine instead ill do the police station and grab some nightsticks , nope 4/7 clears of police station not a single nightstick. This includes checking every locker and having the keys for the armory room.
Ok fine we will hit garages and find a metal pipe good oldmetal pipe never lets you down , good luck i checked 45 garages over the 7 runs and found 5 metal pipes now thats not so bad but they actually break easier now , nobody ever told these devs about the mose hardness scale i guess metal pipe wont be destroyed no matter now many skulls you crack with it but whatever .
Lets go hit the convenience store instead grab some basic food that wont perish so we can be nomads , ohh whats this 300 zombies in and around the store , in EVERY run.
Just dont do it right now the devs dont seem to know what they want from the game anymore , its hardcore cool , but now its also wasting our time with realism loot that breaks immersion in an odd way .
Sure i dont expect to not find dumb trinkets but the old system that effectively just didnt show you was fine i can imagine ya of course there is other crap in these houses i dont need but i dont also need to see a dozen photos , string , lint , and other junk constantly . They watered down the loot tables and changed the weighting and the game just sucks so bad right now.
B41 is very enjoyable i have hundreds of hours on it . B42 unstable is a dumpster fire that will kill the game if it isnt fixed before they launch it .
If you need to relearn the game I would recommend just going with 41 and at least doing a play through.
Some notes about 42 right now:
Sudden aggressive flickering textures that take up whole screen and make you feel sick.
Invisible walls in strange places.
Buildings spawning in with half of them missing.
Can't move simple furniture without carpentry skill (so if you can't get to a window because there is a sofa in the way - you'll need a master carpenter to push it aside. I spawned in on a character stuck between furniture and a wall and literally there was no vanilla way to rescue this character they would just starve and die because of a bedside dresser.)
Can't block doors with furniture... a literal logical staple of zombie survival just... gone. Even with mods the whole 'this door is blocked' thing is gone entirely. They've disabled placing anything in front of doors. It's wild.
A whole host of other nonsense. It released as unstable because it was so far from ready for release it's just wild.
I’m going to try to clear up this confusion for you. Version B41 is great, there’s nothing wrong with it. If you just want to enjoy the game, this version is the safest bet.
B42, on the other hand, has its pros and cons. The good thing is that they’ve added new features, there are more skills, more things to do. As mentioned above, the music is more dynamic, the lighting system has improved. There are animals now, it’s no longer just your character in a world with only zombies. It’s also more detailed, they’ve expanded the lore, the animations, and now characters have voices. The zombies have changed too, they seem more aware of their surroundings. For example, if you’re beating them up in one street, the ones from the neighboring street will hear the noise and come for you. That used to happen, but now I feel it’s more pronounced. In short, zombies harass you more, and they feel more alive and less mechanical. Oh, and the basements, now there are underground areas on the map.
Is it worth jumping to B42? If you’re willing to deal with bugs and play a version that’s just been released and isn’t finished, then sure. If not, it’s not worth it, stick with B41.
