Why is sledgehammer so rare?
I am playing with everything set to abundant, sometimes for meta events, and have the lucky trait. I can go through the muldraugh warehouse and not find a sledgehammer. It is insane.

I play with mods and take the antique collector mod. Does that make other stuff take up super rare slots that may otherwise spawn a sledgehammer? I use lots of other mods too. Could that be the cause?

I found one once before I started using mods.

You can find them at the railyard(outside lv) and warehouses. I use extremely rare loot even worse mod and i find them. I think antique collector makes it so you can find alternative versions of certain items, not sure if sledgehammer is considered one of them.

Most buildings that are colored black on the map have the best chance to have one. I've also found them in hardware stores and abandoned safehouses. They're rare because you can destroy any structure (walls, stairs, roofs, etc.) on the map. This can make a two-story house completely safe from zombies. Not to mention granting access to the gun store in West Point.

It's kind of random. I have 6 sledge hammers in my current play through in the factory building I am holed up in. But I have searched high and low and can not find the instructions for using a generator so I can't have a working fridge to store the vegetables from my rooftop garden.

The game seems to have a built in feast or famine thing where you easily find one very helpful item but another one is nowhere to be seen. I wonder if it's deliberate?

This game seems to follow the "useless stuff is everywhere, most useful items are very-rare-to-the-point-of-non-existence."

I found 2 sledgehammers right outside of my spawn house due to there being a construction crew of zombies working on the sewer.

They are usually meant to be rare, for good reason, they literally let you break down any pre-placed tile on the map. You wanna break a brick wall? do it!

1: sledges are rare, because of their usefull abilities
2: At every new save, the game choose 1-2 items from the loot table, and set them to hyper super extreme rare. Sometimes you can't find needle. Sometimes this item is salt. Etc

I was lucky to find one early in my game, but was amazed that I didn't find a 2nd for a very very long time. It's a good weapon if you have low stats, although it can get you tired out. Don't let yourself become exhausted where you can't even swing it anymore. You won't regenerate stamina when ridiculously tired. Consider bringing a knife on your belt in case this happens as a backup. I used this weapon for a long time, having to repair it a lot like wood glue was the rarest thing in the world. But I ended up switching to using a baseball bat. This tires you out less. Also having died lots of times, I would start each character with a baseball bat so there was a supply of them, even though I'd hardly find any in the world. With a lot of strength the baseball bat will 1 hit multiple enemies.

i wouldnt use them as weapons.
only op chars (10str10fit) can use them to fight.
i mean 2-3 zeds you can kill with it, but not 50.

Makes sense though, because nobody is using "useless" stuff, so you're going to find it everywhere.

Here, take a look at this mod:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2548023785

This will allow you to craft a sledgehammer (and a bunch of other stuff) from materials you can find in the forest. The sledge recipe is rather balanced in my opinion, because you need carpentry level six and a giant pile of stones and some other materials. It isn't going to just give one to you, but it's something that you can work towards, which I think is better than stumbling across one with rng.

Nice mod suggestion although in reality you'd need to forge a heavy piece of metal.
Another mod to consider is one called legendary melee or something. Allows you to combine multiple of the same weapon into an upgraded version, so it could have better condition and do more damage. Then you might consider using a more practical weapon.

cant wait for the new profession tree's that will make all these mods obsolete.
going into forest and be able to craft everything from ground up.
for example a saw, screwdriver, sledge, pots etc..

infact im more hyped about this then about npcs, that will make the game just more chaotic.

I would craft a generator and the manual for it, plus electrical skill 1 book. So let's see I need 2 sticks and a dead ferret. Ah so the ferret capacitor connects to the stick mainframe, I see.

Well yeah. It's not really realistic, unless someone wants to add a makeshift stone sledgehammer item to the game where you've tied together some tree branches and a large rock with way less durability than the vanilla one.

There are a bunch of sledgehammer recipe mods in the workshop. The other one I know of requires metalworking and a propane torch and metal parts. But if you're having trouble finding a sledgehammer you're probably having trouble finding those too.
