Where to find animal trailers?
In earlier builds of B42 I was finding animal trailers all over the place. In 42.10 it seems like the number of road wrecks has been significantly reduced and that was always my primary way of finding animal trailers. In my current game I've searched about half the roads on the whole map and have yet to find one. I'm at the point where it's a significant investment to drive farther to search so I was wondering if there are any spots that tend to spawn them that I can target. Thanks in advance.

check that place and the farms near it , i always find animal trailers there in my playthroughs or surrounding areas, if none are there i would go to irvington cattle place the parking lot usually has some.
The big cattle farm near Irvington always has them in the car park in my experience. They also seem to appear more often near farmland with cows/pigs/sheep grazing. Otherwise its just luck of the draw.
Rumours has it you may find one at a Cattle farm in Irvington. I gave up looking for one on the road nor I would go all the way to Irvington. I end up dragging a stressed cow for a whole day to my base, twice. Get attacked 5 times from a bull, make sure you bring enough bandages with you.
I've already checked the location linked by Puppers. No luck. I guess I'm heading to Irvington when I get some time. Thanks folks.

This is an amazing suggestion, found an animal trailer there
I've found car wrecks to be a bad place to look for trailers, especially with the B42 towing system. As the car, the trailer tends to be in very low condition, and it's just not worth it unless you happen to have the skill and the materials to fix it there on the spot.

I much rather go to the horse track or any of the many, many farms and pick up one in near-perfect condition.
I've never seen one at a farm =( I've only ever found them at wrecks or at that one huge animal farm center near Irvington, which is very far from my location.

Yeah, they'll often be very far from your current location. But so will most semi-unique things, like sledgehammers, too.
They don't spawn at every farm or animal-related location, but they are much more likely to spawn there than anywhere else. You might have to spend a few in-game days driving around to different locations to find one.

Or you could set the vehicle spawn rate to higher in the sandbox settings, that will spawn more trailers as well. If it is set to high enough, you might even get animal trailers at random car parks in the cities.

Despite my current problems finding an animal trailer, sledgehammers have been nearly non-existent for me since I started playing. Until yesterday I was at just over 900 hours in PZ and only found 2 sledges total in that entire time. Yesterday I found two within a single in-game hour. I feel like I'm still below average on those, but at least I have them for my current playthrough.

Just now I also found an animal trailer finally. It was in a wreck at the end of a dead-end in a small town. When connecting it to my truck, it and the truck flipped way up in the air and turned over 3 times before landing on the wheels. The trunk received slight damage. Gotta love the physics in this game.

The sledgehammer is probably the most rare item in the game, other than that one skillbook or magazine you need at that very moment. I never rely on it for my playthrough, but will plan on how to use it on the 1/200 playthroughs I manage to stumble across it.
My only tip for that is to look out for the roadside event "Construction", where it has the highest chance of spawning (1/5, I think, compared to 1/20 from the SWAT car, which I personally have never encountered).

I do that with most things though, I plan according to what I find, rather than spending the time trying to find what I've planned for. The current one I'm playing just had power and water cut at the same time, and I got no water collector and no generator, so all my food is non-perishable. I didn't even pick up the perishable food I've found along the way because I didn't have a generator yet. I've picked up zero cooking tools, for the same reason, though I guess I could've cooked it over a fire, but where would I store fresh food for more than 2 days, when I can just down a bottle of mayonnaise and read a comic book?

On my previous one, I stumbled on a farm with a trailer, so that one was a butcher/farmer run. The one before that got all the skill books for carpentry, so I built my own little mansion.
