Edit: Figured I should probably mention that the core of the game is the same across the patches right now. I don't see them changing much until maybe NPCs are added, as they will definately change your survival plan. Right now though it's just the zombies you need to worry about, so any PZ survival guide should give you a few good pointers to get the ball rolling.
Start in Muldraugh, raid Cortman's for meds, raid Sunstar Hotel for Big bags, go to lumber mill for Axe's and Sledge. This simple run will let you have all the tools you need to survive for months.
Also,check all the zombie bodies.
Initially they will suck at cuttign trees but it will help build your foraging up and as you gain level in Blade Maintenance it will become more and more useful as a tool.
I suggest using real Axe as weapons and only when there is more then 2 zombies. For 2 zombies or less focus on pushing them on the ground (spacebar) and the stumping their skull in (spacebar). It prevent you from using your weapon and requires less stamina.
You have to learn proper placement of your character compare to the zombies when you use that technique and there is more then 1. The number of zombies you can handle depends on your skill as a player, the time you have before more zombies shows up, the space you can maneouver in, the strenght of you character and the level of fatigue you are at.
The biggest change in the latest patch is that if you rely on foraging for food and want to eat berries and mushroom take herbalist (unless you like dying of poison). You can still find edible food without that trait but it will be a lot less.
Biggest thing you need to focus on in this game is situational awareness. Always pay attention to what is around you.
Constantly look around you, especially after every 3-4 hits on a zombie has you are trying to break his skull in. It's a perfect time for a zombie to sneak up on you, bite and infect you.
EDIT: So i did one forage and found a tree branch on my first try. I guess i was just really unlucky.
