is this game better played with mods or in vanilla?
I havent gotten so far in the game but im wondering if the vanilla game lacks stuff further ahead and mods complement it later in the game? Which mods are good to add?

That actually depends entirely on you.

Personally, I haven't been too many mods other than some QoL mods these days. However many players use hundreds of mods, so there's that. I recommend just getting more experience with the game and then look to mod things as you see fit.

I think end game is lacking a bit. the next update will solve some of that with being able to survive in an environment in low/no loot scenario, but I think the bulk of end game is going to come from NPCs. There are some mods that add end game things as well, like something like Hydrocraft, but those tend to bloat the loot pool with a bunch of useless stuff too. It is still an option though.

At least learn what the game is before modding it. Lots of bad advice and irrelevant questions on the forums here from people with modded games, assuming their specific list of features are universal.

Most mods just serve to make the game easier anyway, so its like having training wheels. But some add new layers of difficulty.

I agree good take.

The only mods I feel absolutely necessary are Better Sorting, Tidy-up Meister, and Fuel Side Indicator.

Better Sorting because more item categories for better inventory management. Absolutely necessary for loot goblins.

Tidy-Up Meister so you don't clutter your main inventory after crafting.

Fuel Side Indicator because why isn't this in vanilla.

Other than that, as Belt said above. Learn what the game is like in vanilla before even bother modding. See what you dislike or feel lacking, find a mod to change that, rinse and repeat.

Vanilla No Mods
Without mods, the game is just fine. Everything is more or less there in some equivalent fashion.

No mods = less glitches (And the game kinda needs all the help it can get with that)
Running a server your players don't need to try to load up whatever million mods you have.
You and your players don't need to keep up with updates on them.

And frankly, with a few exceptions, the mods just make the game easier.
I just don't get playing with 9 weapons, a tank, backpack full of cures, a fully stocked starting base, and power armor. (Queue the "all play styles are valid" retorts)
I also don't think the game needs 1,000 different canned goods and every specific car from the 90s. That level of detail is cool, but not at the expense of all the glitches and then having to troubleshoot.

There are a few I like at least the concept of.
I used to run Shared Map, but it also ended up breaking mine and another player's map after we cleared the server and started it over.
I'm curious about the Bulletin Board one but, I would rather a player just be able to join the server and though I wish there was a functioning board in the vanilla game, frankly you can get by using notebooks and paper.
Common Sense was alright but we had trunk issues, and there were so many ways to open a can of food, they might as well have all had pull tabs on them.
Tried the pit trap one but players kept dying entering their own bases. That thing was sensitive to where you stepped! Slightly cut a corner and you were dead.
I love there is a Lancia Stratos ... but how one ended up in knox county raises more questions then answers.

Personally love the vanilla game, but mods mean that you can keep it fresh. Once I had a handle on the basics I got into the habit of adding one or two mods per new run. Not going to say how many mods I have now :)

Vanilla Vehicles Animated. This is a Vanilla mod that adds in the immersion that was broken by the developer due to adding multiplayer. So this mod just fixes what was once broken. Only mod I am using and it is awesome to have the doors, hoods and trunks open.
