Missing mods from Workshop
Stopped playing around the New Year in hopes that B42 was gonna be right around that corner. Well, a buddy and I were discussing playing again and when I went to load our previously played game/ server (modded) there are 2 unknown mods that are blank, 0mb and have a blue "Not Subscribed". When trying to install these mods from the server list I'm met with an error message, "Error subscribing to workshop item". Is there a way to figure out what mods these are and reinstall them or a way to remove them from the server list without breaking or losing anything from our old game? In the section they are in, they were listed alphabetical. I'd tried to remove all mods starting with the letter M but was still unsuccessful in starting the server still. Any help is appreciated.

You could try getting the number of the workshop item, in the host settings mods/steam workshop, and put that into google as a workshop link, to find out which mod is missing (google sometimes remembers pages that are long gone).

Example, a mod that's not missing, but just to explain what I mean, somewhere in the mod manager or host settings, you find the number of a mod: 2694448564

Workshop pages start like that, followed by a number:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=

Now combine the two:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2694448564 and ask google about it, to find it refers to Mod Manager.

You could also see if the mod (or number) is mentioned somewhere on your hdd (you didn't make backups, did you?)?

The game automatically backups the server files (and info about mods), depending on how you set it, so you could find some info that way. (N) down below is a number from 1 to the number of backups to keep, 5 by default, any one of those may be your old game.

Like:
c:/Users/(username)/Zomboid/backups/period/backup_(N).zip/mods/default.txt
View it and see what mods it lists.

Or:
c:/Users/(username)/Zomboid/backups/period/backup_(N).zip/Server/(yourservername).ini has a line with "WorkshopItems=...." Which is again the above mentioned numbers from the link.

All that can only help you find out which mod is missing, and then you can look for a replacement or think whether you can do without it. Or maybe search for a newer version of it.

(I went looking for a missing mod in a different game once, and found at least some info that way. :) )

Oh, and for starting the server without error, you'd need to remove the number and the mod name from the two server host settings for mods/Steam workshop (I think).

Thank you for this, I'll give it a shot!

I ended up having to remove the mods from the Steam Workshop menu in settings (Forgotten about that) and was able to load in. What struck me as weird is that when searching out the mods I was already subscribed/installed and even after unsubscribing and resubscribing to it, it still didn't load properly. Couldn't figure out the other of the 2 mods but just removing them worked. Thank you again.

it happens when the mods are taken down for whatever reason

What he says, when someone removes the mod from the workshop they end up missing in the game they are for. Nothing left to subscribe to, not even a button to unsubscribe properly.

Like, game walks into Steam with the list to tick to check for updates or something, Steam says "doesn't exist" and deletes your local folder with it, game folds arms "but I have it in my list, gimme", Steam: "Nope, go away.", Game: out of cheese error error error,...

You can only prevent that with a local copy of the mod, somewhere else, where Steam can't see you hiding it. ;P

There's a guide on how to backup mods and how to then use them when they vanish from the Steam workshop, here among the game's Steam guides. I'm confident that the one who made it will turn up with a link. :) (They usually do. I don't want to steal their beans.)

Thanks much for the award points! :))

In case you want to prevent the same issue in the future, you might want to look into this
