I can see the injury assessment being way more useful in multiplayer, though, when you need to check to see if people are bit/hurt/infected. I imagine with a lower First Aid skill, it's possible to miss things like foreign objects in the skin (glass shards), zombie bites or signs of infection.
I have found nothing that confirms or even suggests First Aid has any other benefits. Reduced chance of infection is likely a byproduct of being able to treat any injuries faster and more effectively (making you effectively more resistant to injury).
"As the skill level increases, the player will be able to treat wounds faster, make better bandages, understand more ailments and spot infections. Experience is gained by players treating themselves or other players."
