Day/Length - Is This A Good Idea?
Hello guys,

I have a question about the length of day settings. So, I just recently got into this game and I'm on my first solo playthrough. I've set the day length to 23 hours, and also made it so the water/power goes off after 6-12 months. The reason I set the day length to 23 hours is to delay the water and power going off even further. Is this a logical approach for someone like me who wants to learn the ropes?

With 23 hour days this seems to give me plenty of time to explore the world, scavenge for supplies, find vehicles, craft items, plant crops (I already have a pretty sweet potato garden), figure how to cook, learn skills, and just leisurely take my time. What are the advantages and disadvantages of playing with longer days, and also, does this make the night time equally as long too? Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Update:

Please also note I'm playing the standard version and not ''Build 41''. I don't really like jumping into Betas that are still heavily in development so I'm just going to wait until the new build comes out as an official update to the game. While the new build looks absolutely amazing, I am willing to wait for as long as it takes.

Yes. Nights will be long as well.

With long days everything scales. You wont get hungry or tired as fast, etc. So you'll probably be all set up with years worth of scavenged food before you even get hungry and then you'll be running out of things to do in the day.

EDIT: Also to note. Potatoes take on average 17 days to harvest. At 23 hour days it will take 391 game play hours before you can harvest them. You'll probably end up bored of that run long before that happens.

Okay, brilliant.

I'll just keep these setting then for my first playthrough. I'm a complete noob at the game so I want to learn how to play first before worrying about my water and power supply cutting off. The only thing that'll likely annoy me the most is longer nights. But ah well, I'll just have to power through and keep on keeping on I guess. Not too worried about farming taking much longer. I'm just planting crops now to simply learn how to do it. Finding the seeds, digging the ground with a shovel, filling up my watering can at the sink, watering the crops, etc etc. That sort of thing.

Loving the game so far. I've always wanted an open world zombie game that was as close to The Walking Dead as possible, and THIS is it.

We can actually see the headlights of build 41 on the horizon now. It won't be much much longer until it merges lanes with the stable build.
(*Disclaimer... is not a dev - doesn't know nuffin bout actual release dates of next build)

The gameplay differences between the two builds might become frustrating later when you switch over and have to relearn a lot of tactics and readjust your strategies. What you get used to now will likely get you killed in the FUTURE.

Keep this tidbit in mind when you do play build 41.

Hmmm, interesting.

I thought the biggest difference in Build 41 was animations and clothing/customisation. Has things like farming, cooking, healing, and zombie behaviour all been changed too? From the videos I've watched on YouTube it looked mostly the same to me in terms of gameplay. But granted, I've been doing a lot more playing than watching so maybe I just didn't notice.

I know the character movement may feel a little wonky at first, but I am nothing if not adaptable. I'm sure I'll get used to it. :steamhappy:

the combat is MUCH harder in build 41... like even experienced players were dying until they got used to it... and those were people who knew everything about the game beforehand... since the combat is much more deadly in build 41 its usually better to use stealth instead of fighting everything unless you really know what your doing.

I like it. Yeah, it does look a bit tougher from what I've seen. You definitely gotta be a lot more strategic it seems. I'm very excited to see what's coming!

Haha, I'll look forward to it. When I do get bored, which will eventually happen I'm sure, then that means I've learnt all there is to know. Then I'll be ready... for a whole new beginning.

I don't recommend that for day length as when you sleep, even with time sped up, it takes forever to actually wake up. Personally I think you would be better off going with 2 hour days and change the shut off time for power and water, if that's what you're worried about, to something like the 6 month option.

I find 4 hours optimal for me. Gives me enough time to explore and travel (animation isn’t scaled so walking, fighting, and exercise you get more when day length is increased) while not having extreme waits for farming or other timed events like cooking.

I use 12-hour days and can get a lot done. Real-time 1-for-1 seems a bit much, but to each his own. Server-wise I'm not certain anything slower than 4 hour days is worth it.

Just a little update...

Well, it finally happened. Night time came, and as some of you said it would... it lasted forever. So with that I decided to make a new game and start fresh with different day length settings.

I was going to power through it but after I took stock of all my supplies that I managed to gather up, I quickly realised that I had enough food to last weeks if not longer. The game was going to become too easy and I could see that. Ultimately, this is what lead to me starting over.

I'm now using 3 hours for day length. Most people seem to recommend either 2 or 4 hours, so I went in-between and made it 3 hours. I also made the zombies slower and weaker as well but everything else besides day length was left the same as before. Seems to be a nice balance. My character gets hungrier more frequently, so food is becoming more of a necessity which I like. I've also experienced different weather cycles too which never happened on my previous playthrough. Pretty cool!

I certainly can't get as much done throughout the day anymore as I once could, but the knowledge I gained from that playthrough will make it much easier for me to survive now. My new beginning has begun! I most likely won't change anything now until the new build releases and I'm forced to wipe everything.
