Is it even possible to have a no zombie respawn run?
I was really into this game, but when the developers released an update, it ruined my no zombies respawn run because, well, they were all over the place again after the update.

Is this addressed, or is it still operating in this manner?

Yes you can, by changing the setting in sandbox option. Set the respawn timers to 0. And respawn multiplier to 0 just to be safe.

The recent update doesn't seem to have anything to do with sudden respawn as far I've seen on my existing playthrough.

Maybe you just haven't reached peak population yet?

If I remember correctly you couldn't edit the world settings after it was created

Sadly yes, you can't. But you can use a mod for that or make a new save file and copy the settings to your existing save file manually.

What's the mod? Maybe that could be enough

You can edit the world of an existing sandbox save through the map_sand.bin

It will however require a bit more than using the mod. This video explains the basics of editing the file.

If you would rather trust a mod to do it for you, then this one is probably what you’re looking for.
