That seems to be the answer you're looking for.
B42 mods will be B42 only, and the older mods for B40-B41 will still work if you play B41.
You can always use B41 even after B42 comes out of Unstable, just like currently you can go back and play B40 if you want to find out what a complete mess the game was just one Build ago.
As for switching there "should" be no issue...
I would not worry that much, if you already backed up the mods. Usually the game developers leave the access to the previous major version so you can continue playing your current playthrough until you feel ready to update. And there is always the Steam~way to rollback your game version if necessary.
So you are good with that.
About the savegames we can tell for sure once it is released. But I expect it like dragonsphotoworks mentioned, that you will be easily able to distinguish the savegames. Treat it like modding the game with all usual precautions doing backups etc. etc. pp. and you will never have to fear any changes with the game.
