the community mantra for this game is basically "just don't get hit". stuff that reduces punishment is nice, but for 8 points? its good for long term builds since eventually you're likely to get hit if you're not a god, but relying on rng for your builds is generally not recommended. some people even consider thin ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ points. you can play how you want but taking traits that make it easier to avoid getting hit in the first place such as keen hearing is generally more practical.

For PVE its a noob trait, which saps points that could be used to speed up the grind in other skills, or give you better perception.

Just don't get hit. You move and attack faster than zombies, so the only reason you get hit is because you let them get close enough to initiate an attack. Unless you're playing with sprinters, but even then, better perception and endurance is way more helpful. 7% less chance of being injured just doesn't count for much when you've got 5 attacks coming at you. Is just better to get out of there before they can attack.

Might be worth it for PVP though, since you'll have a better chance of surviving that knife fight, or baseball bat across the face. But the real threat from players is guns, which that trait does nothing for.

Do the opposite, take thin-skinned. Spend the extra points on fast learner, or being a beefcake for extra loot hauling.

This. Keen hearing will save your life 100 times for every time Thick Skin does. Keen Hearing is the only trait that you will miss once you have played with it a few times.

Cat's eyes too:)
Because being able to fight on roads(gravel, sand and concrete ONLY though!) is a godsend when you are wandering outside without a torch:)

True, it has been so long since I've played vanilla I forgot base-game torches are garbage

I'd argue Keen Hearing is as useless as Eagle Eyes and Thick Skinned. But then again, everyone has their own play style. And I play in a way I don't require them as much as I always need Strong and Athletic.

Yeah I much prefer thin skinned. Even with thick skinned you can still die to a zombie scratch.

Non-zombie related injuries are usually incurred through desperation (ex. I have to climb through this window without removing glass/jump down a floor or two without laying a sheet rope or I will die) and you can just take it easy for a couple days after escaping that situation, so thin skinned/slow healer doesn't really matter.

Well, if Keen Hearing is useless to you, the odds are 1) your perception/reaction speed is way better than mine (likely the case), or you do a 360 spin every 5-10 seconds when in combat, a thing I will never get used to do.
I play with a small amount of sprinters (3%-4%), and without KH stashing loot in my car would be a horrible experience.
If you are on the "slow side" or the "lazy side" of the population, KH is a "lifespan changer".

See the thing is you could take thick skin or you could just avoid getting hit ever, and take thin skin for the points.

you can just pick all of your encounters and just never be in a position to get hit. I only get hit when I f up from getting tired irl and accidentally run into the zombies

Oh yes, I'm still a ♥♥♥♥♥ when it comes to sprinters. I only do night/day sprinters so I know when to hunker down and play it safe. And I don't play with quick respawn so I usually take my time cleaning up the entire town before going around looting. Guess that's why.

Thick skin is fine for new players, but once you have things a little more in hand, it's actually a waste of points. You're better off not getting hit in the first place.

With a "sprinkle" of sprinters you truly learn to admire them, because you can see them shine among their inferior bredrens. I frequently smile when I see them, pushing the other zeds aside, coming at full force among the crowd. For the same reason, I use 20% slow shamblers (the "old ladies" I call them). The more kinds of zeds there are, the more interesting they all seem (I wish there were even more types). A good use of the mod "Wandering Zombies" is also a nice addition to see them "come to life". Otherwise, they just form ridiculous stationary clusters.
