While Kentucky is indeed kind of a boondocks, do they really have that many wells and manual hand-cranked water pumps?
You'd be surprised how backwards a 'developed' country can be.
I grew up in a G7 nation in the 90s, about 50 miles from a city. Spent my first 6 years with a hand pump, washing out of buckets, using an outhouse, and not having electricity.
Wasn't even part of a religious community that rejects technology. Thats just how incredibly poor and lacking infrastructure the place was.
