I recommend using Magpie, playing in windowed mod with a more reasonable resolution and scaling up that way. That's how i do it and it works flawlessly with magpies default settings.
Edit. I can confirm that lossless scaling works well. for 1920x1080p I used these settings.
1. windowed mode in game.
2. set refresh rate in game to half of your max for your screen. 75 for me.
3. no vsync in game
4. Scale at x2 in lossless. They have a x3 mode but I have not used it yet.
It doubled my frames. There are suggestions on the lossless forum about the settings to get started using the program. Better than what I could tell ya lol. Those settings have me at 144 fps in game. The max refresh rate for my monitor.
Good luck.
Magpie does the same thing, but unlike what you recommend, it is free.
