Personally, I find that vanilla firearms are more than enough. But I usually either use B41 firearms or vanilla firearms expansion.
Vanilla Firearms Expansion is also a great choice. It has plenty of new stuff and the devs are active.
B41 Firearms is an all-timer for me. It's the one I started using and it's still good, just not in Multiplayer. There is a revamped version of it too but I haven't tried it out yet.
If you want something that's developed with the aim of being kind of a mixture of the three above, maybe try mine. :)
And yeah, gun mods aren't usually compatible with each other. There's lots of lua stuff that's going on with making a gun mod.

Other mods just tend to feel like they are trying to satisfy some power fantasy while B41 Firearms adds more guns while still keeping everything relatively zomboid-feeling.
